i've always wondered what all the different types of insulins are and why is it suited to one person but not another? Im on humalog and protophane and i havent heard anyone mention of protophane, is there another brand or word for it?

Protophane is the scientific name, as in 'insulin protophane'. Since you're on Humalog I'd imagine that then you're also on Humalin I. This is practically identical to Insulatard (also known as insulin isophane), except for its method of production.

One of the confusing things about diabetes is the differing brand and scientific names. For instance, Lantus is insulin glargine, Levemir is insulin detemir. Basically though, protophane is like isophane - a basal insulin that has a peak action period and loses effectiveness around 18 hours.

Currently I can't find a good online insulin type and action profile chart but I'll poke around and see if I can find a hard copy in one of my magazines for you.
