I was walking to work this morning and my mind was on Diabetes, of course. It's rarely a subject that isn't at the least in the back of my mind at all times. I was looking at my pump and realizing that even though they are getting more popular, I rarely see anyone with one. Then my mind wandered to the fact that, I can honestly say I don't think I have ever run into an African American Type I, juvenile onset diabetic. I happen to know plenty of adults that are Type II, but haven't really met any Type I African Americans. Even on this board, I don't think that any of the individuals I've seen on the name with a face thread are African American.

My question is, of all of us reading this post, how many of you know of any African Amercians with Type I Diabetes? I mean this question in all sincereity and in no way any kind of demeaning or prejudice manner. I just wonder?

Granted; all of us know a celebrity or 2 that may be. The absolutely gorgeous Halle Berry, for instance, is a Type I diabetic. But do you know any regular people or is this a more Caucasian malady?

p.s. If I offend anyone, I apologize in advance... :)

Halle Berry is T1? And she looks that good?

Meech, in another thread it was stated that asians are more predisposed to T1, which suprised me...I now lots of asians, and nadda single T1 (or T2). Whereas there are lots of diabetics in the USA (10million +) when you consider there are 280 million people living in America, I guess odds are you're not going to run into too many diabetics in normal interactions, and even less of us blessed to have a pump.

(okay, back on topic)

I have noticed the same thing. People actually look at me weird when they see my pump. Being hispanic I also see much more T2 than anything else. You are very right about this.

Duck,
Tell me about it... How can Halle have that bod???????? :****mate:

Meech, you can't walk to work anywhere in Georgia, can you? You have to drive! (I am allowed to say that cos I lived there for 25 years :) The last time I was in Atlanta I was walking along the road (no sidewalk of course) from the hotel to the mall and I was getting all sorts of "oh that poor guy without a car" or "oh that poor guy with a mental problem" looks. That was funny.

Anyway, I think I read somewhere that one of Halle Berry's parents is white. I don't know if that's true. Otherwise I personally am only aware of caucasian or asian T1's.......

You'd think that Halle must use lots of cover-up since she's so thin, you'd imagine that it would be hard for her to inject herself in her sides, and even then, that she'd have bruises from the injections. She appears a lot with her midriff showing, but it doesn't appear that she's having any issues with that. Hmmmm.

Of the ones I know, not one has diabetes (that I'm aware of) and I've never seen one in a doctor's office, as far as I can remember.

Hello,

Okay, you beat me to the punch with Halle Berry. And hey, since when aren't celebrities "regular people". Ahem...I believe their anatomy and physiology is pretty much the same as us lowly folk (ok, maybe Halle Berry is an exception, lol).

Ok, add to that list:

Q-tip (born, Jonathan Davis) a hip hop artist formerly of A Trible Called Quest, type 1....and the only rapper to refer to himself as a "funky diabetic" in one of his songs. Very outspoken about his diabetes and involved in awareness and fundraising.

Miles Davis, type 1,

We can't forget B.B. King...not sure what type he is, though.

And, she is not famous, but a friend of mine is African American and type 1 and her mother died of comlications from diabetes (also type 1).

Well, that is the best I could do...so far.

for most people it seems like t1 is really so uncommon and unheard of, i've had t1 since i was 10, i am 32 now,so doing the math i've had it for over 20 years now,i am still going strong? i've never had any bad complications, knock wood, just some minor ones, however, i really don't think about long term future plans.i just want to be around to see my kids grown, and i don't want to be a burden to them, i feel guilty now for the times my son(6) has helped me when i was low.but when i tell people that i'm t1 for 20+ years they look at me and say are you sure you aren't t2? like i'm lying about it or something,a dr recently asked me that. i was t1 when humalin insulin was just coming out,and my first glucose moniter was awful, you had to put the blood on the strip and then put a solution on it and wait a minute and blot and then put the strip in the machine, i bless those who made the freestyle flash it is such an improvement from the first moniter i had some 2o years ago, but anyways i'm babbling on and for the question on african americans and t1 i've never known any personally only t2's.

Most unlikely chat-up line or fetish ever!

Halle Berry is T1? And she looks that good?

I'd just like to draw your attention to my picture in the 'Name with a face' thread. :o

From what I've read, black people are more predisposed to diabetes than the white population, although as for which type I'm not sure. I've never met a black person with diabetes before, but having said that, I've only ever once in my whole life met someone else with diabetes and he was a T2. According to my personal experience, I'm the only one in the world with T1!

Just a little correction :smartass: ...I think Halle Berry is Type 2 (I know she doesn't fit the general characteristics  ) , but I believe I read that in People Magazine.

Durrell C. (I typed his last name, but then figured that wasn't exactly a great idea.) Not famous. He was on my high school's football team. He was one of a very small percentage of African-American Kids in school, also T1. We had some good times talking about T1, but he was very very quiet about having it. It wasn't something he told lots of people. Maybe there is more of a stigma about having a chronic illness within the African American community? Or it could just be because he was a guy? (I'm trying to think of reasons why it would seem like only Caucasian / Asian people have T1) I'd have never known Durrell had diabetes unless a mutual friend told us "you both have that sugar thingy"

well, lol. No they can't drive down here. You either have the local southerner that was never taught how to use a turn signal or the fact that pedestrians have the right of way. then you have the Northerners; either a crazy, manic, bi-polar with a short fuse and a heavy foot, or there is the Canadian retirees that drive about 35mph in the left lane of the Interstate.
I drive from my house downtown to the parking garage I park in, then walk the other 12 blocks to my office. And I am a rare breed in southerners. I'm a southern boy raised by a Michigander and a full blooded Greek. Somehow, dispite them, I am actually a very good driver. yeah, definitely, def' def' definitely a good driver! :hypocrite

First, how many points do you get if you hit the Targets or Road Speed Bumps :whistling .

I actually don't know any that have either, but I am replying to the part about other people having pumps. Over the July 4th holiday we were camping, as I was in the middle of yelling at my son for taking off on me, a lady looks at me and says "you have a pump". I looked at her like what is she talking about, then it hit me. I said yeah, do you? and she does. I didn't get to talk to her because the aforementioned son took off on me again.

I have talked to people who know someone that has a pump. My ex sister in law also has one, which makes it nice to talk to someone. Though she does not like her pump, same as mine, so I don't bring it up that much, lol. I also seen someone going into the grocery store wearing one but it didn't hit me till I was in the car what it was. Pretty good for wearing a pump myself.

I've read Halle Berry saying she "has weaned herself off of insulin" she even says this in her autobiography and other articles I've read, I don't know what the **** this means, how can a type 1 wean themselves off of insulin? reduce it maybe... unless she's running high all of the time, or she could be as one other person says type 2, who knows with these wacky celebs??

Most people I know who are from an asian, indian or african background tend to have type 2.....but I know that there are children in this category who have type 1 so go figure.

I guess she's a Type II, I just figured with as svelt as she is that she was Type I. I won't hold it against her, there's other things I'd like her to hold against me, however! mmmmm... er uh, what where we talking about?

Hello,

Miles Davis, type 1,

Lee

I believe Miles Davis was a Type II diabetic.

And isn't Jonathan Davis the singer of Korn? Ahhh... Google... there are TWO Jonathan Davis's!

I actually meet very few people of ANY race with Type I diabetes. In fact, in six years with it, I've only met 3 people with Type I!! Thus... I visit these forums...

I was trying to remember the yrs. I went to Camp Banting(age 8 to 13),
for 2 weeks every summer and out of about 120 Kids, I recall only 3 that were black. Is it okay to say that? I don't know anymore. There were other races also beside white of course. I also remember a lovely Lady(on this forum) named Jazzy who is African-American I believe. Her cute little Boy(don't recall his name, I think he is 7 or 8 yrs.)has Type 1. Their pic may still be in the Names with Faces.
