Wanted to introduce myself.

As my signature states, I was dx'd in 1990 following a pregnancy that ended in Toxemia and the C-section birth at seven months of a beautiful 2.5lb determined little girl who is now a very bright, beautiful, healthy (thank God), determined 15 year old.

Six months after delivery I started losing 2 lbs. a week, would go off of antibiotics for sinus infections and get the infections back the next day and had small sores that would not heal. This was near the end of the AIDS scare where they were still unsure of a lot of it. I thought I got AIDS from the blood transfusions after the birth (God, why did you give me a baby just to take me away). When the doctor said 'I have bad news. You're diabetic", I responded "Thank God" to which she responded "Does this appeal to you?". "Yes, more than what I thought it was"
Seems the toxemia attacked the pancreas and weakened it.

Highest Ha1c has been 7.6. Most around 7. Fifteen years later, same concerns as everyone else - will I have heart problems, will I have kidney failure. Just got good news from second opthalmologist - "no retinal damage at all - unheard of for someone with diabetes for fifteen years." Hopefully, as healthy in other areas. About five years ago, I had to have an angiogram of my brain (long story - medical CYA) and was told my arteries look normal for my age (is that a good thing? )

Have visited your site a few times after a friend on the Meniere's site told me about you. You seem like a really great group, like my Meniere's buddies.

Yada yada yada. Just wanted to say hi before I started joining in on the posts! You'll be hearing more from me.

Welcome to this wonderful place Spirit! :)

Great news if you don't have retinal damage yet and if your arteries look good. Be thankful! Be happy about it! :) It means you're doing something right.

About getting heart disease... or kidney failure... I know non-diabetic people who developped heart diseases... and suffered other kind of failures (liver, etc). Yes it is worrying. Yes you must never forget you're at risk. I believe that by taking good care of yourself, striving for low blood sugars, and with the help of a good and supportive health care team there is certainly hope you shall not develop these. You have to hang on to the hope! I hear hope is good for your BG anyway :hmmmm:

The very best to you,

Spirit, I'm so gald you posted here. I didn't know that being toxic during pregnancy can attack your pancrease. I did basically the same thing in 1998, my daughter was born at 28 weeks gestation, by c-sesction, and weighed 780 grams (1 lb 11 ounces). Then, with child #2, a boy, I had gestational diabetes and he weighed 9lbs 4 ounces...talk about extreems! I have been dxd as T2 in January. I've always wondered how strong the link between then and now was. I'm so glad I come here. I always learn something new. Thanks! oh, my girl is now a happy, healthy and very active 7 year old. God is good!

Wow - thanks again for such a great welcome!!!!

I've already posted a few questions re: trying to lose weight and tingling in hands and feet now that I am exercising which I am taking as a good sign that blood flow is increasing (as opposed to decreasing) due to aerobic activity and supplements to help circulation. Losing weight is impossible for me but the posters have some great input I am going to try.

Liz - small world and sometimes scary, huh. But, you're right, God is good. We'll have to compare notes sometime. Dewey - thanks for the compliments!

You guys are wonderful. Thanks, again.
