I was diagnosed in April with T2, my fasting BS was 370 and the 2hr was 450. I tried Metformin and was sick as a dog. Dr switched me over to Lantus at night(they didn't want to do the trial and error with orals due to the fact that I've had a prior stroke) I did okay on the Lantus(20U) until I ate, then my BS would rise. We tried this for 2 months and then we added Humalog before each meal. I count carbs and go to the gym everyday(30 minutes of cardio and weight training 2/week). Also do evening walks and stay very active during the day. My BS is now consistently 100-120. I got on the scale at the gym this morning and I've gained 3 lbs and 1/2 inch in my waist. This is in the last 3 weeks. I'm compulsive about what I eat, I feel that I'm living on broccoli.
I guess I was feeling really good about getting my BS down and adapting to a new life style and this just threw me for a loop.
Do you just keep gaining weight or does this taper off. How do you deal with it.
Really frustrated

Oh, can many empathize with you! :dito: After I was dx'ed with type 1, three years ago, my weight started going up and continued to do that for good while  . Weight gain is definitely easy when you are on insulin. Insulin is linked with appetite, hunger, etc. I know how frustrating it is , trust me. Finally, I'm starting to get a handle on things...but it's taking a lot of work and effort. I'm trying to cut back on what I eat and also I exercise for at least an hour each day.
It sounds like you are trying to eat healthy and exercising...keep it up. :top: 3 lbs isn't that much and there could be a variety of reasons for it. Also, consider seeing a registered dietician...he or she may be able to provide insight on your current meal plan.
Don't give up!

I have started gaining back some of the 25 lbs. I lost in the 4 months before being dxd, and I'm not thrilled about it. I don't exercise as much as you guys, really just on the weekends, but I've always been able to maintain my weight by not going overboard when eating. Now that I'm a T1, that doesn't seem to be working too well, as I've gained back 18 of those pounds. Ugh. I guess I've got to start exercising if I want to be smart about this.
I sympathize, Val!

T 1.5 here and do I know what you're going through.
With all that I've done over the last 10 weeks, before I was diagnosed, I'd have dropped 15-- 20 lbs/ 6--10 kilos----not now,however
waist size ain't gone down and weight hasn't dropped for more than 12-24 hours.
Diabetes STINKS

Hi Val,
Since becoming T1 diabetic 6 years ago, I've put back on all of the weight that I had pre-T1-diabetes + 15 pounds. I've heard that people who tightly control their BG -- and are NOT on a low-carb or other type of diet -- tend to gain about 10 - 15 pounds (beyond what they weighed pre-T1-diabetes). Maybe I'm BSing and giving myself an excuse for gaining 10-15 pounds, but I think this was a secondary conclusion of the DCCT trial done 10-15 years ago. I think of the 100-200 calories extra I eat every day in order to boost my BG when it goes low -- and the weight gain makes sense!
Hope this helps,
Bryan

A lot of us here know how you feel. Diabetes is a very unfair disease, amongst other things!. I know from feeding low blood sugars, the medications (insulin, pills), and having your blood sugar under control simply means----- no spilling all that sugar in your urine (where a lot of calories were going too). I say to myself HEALTH is before any thing else, including size 4 jeans... LOL.
