2 Hour GTT Results - Huh??

Hi there! I am a 34 yr old who just did a 2 hour GTT as a follow-up to insulin-dependent gestational diabetes.

The day of the test, I took my own monitor with me (a regularly calibrated Accu-Check Compact), and tested one minute prior to each arm stick. My numbers showed 104 fasting, and 249 at the 2 hour mark. I was SO bummed to see that I was about to be diagnosed with full-blown diabetes.

HOWEVER -- I just got back from my doc this morning, and my "official" results?? 88 fasting and 180 at the 2 hour mark. What the heck? I figured there would be some discrepancy between my measurements and the lab, but THIS much? Any suggestions?

I was taught a blood test difference from my monitor to the medical lab tests will be about 10% varience, but your 14% is to far off for that to work.

How old were your strips, when did you last run a sample test on your monitor? Have your strips been exposed to high temps (over 80deg) for an extended period of time?

If none of this could be the cause, you might call accu check and ask them, Dex replaced a monitor for me when it was not getting consistant reading, free of charge.

Did you by any chance get the Glucose test solution on your hands. That stuff is pretty sticky and messy and it is easy to get it on your hands from the cup or from wiping your month after drinking it. If it was on the finger that you tested it would really throw off of the test.

I used some Purell before each test to make sure that I didn't have anything on my testing finger, so I don't think that should have done it...

I ended up calling Accu-Check and they said that there was no way to compare venous blood to finger-stick blood to check meter accuracy. Hmmm... Regardless, they thought the spread was too significant, so they will be sending me a new meter and new test strips. I'm thinking I might want to have a different monitor anyway - I've seen some great stuff about Freestyle Flash.
