I'm just curious . . . we had a few disucssions in our classes about foods that seem to be good for us, but drive our bg sky high without any clear reason. Anyone know any of these?
Here are the ones we found in class:
1) Arizona Diet Green Tea with Splenda - Drives your count sky high even though it appears that it shouldn't.
2) Korean and Chinese barbecue sauces from restaurants or stores - Again, drives your count sky high, but sometimes a day later.
Any others?

For me...
Sfree Jello!! :dontknow:
It really depends on the person, or shall I say the diabetic..lol
Arizona tea does not do anything to me. The barbeQ sauce, on the other hand, no matter where its from, PURE MOLASSES! :creep:

Hmmm it does nothing for my sugar.
2) Korean and Chinese barbecue sauces from restaurants or stores - Again, drives your count sky high, but sometimes a day later.
Never tried that Korean or Chinese bbq sauses. Is it the same as plain old BBQ sause ? Now that drives my sugar into the sky.

Mine would be grapes...one would think that since they are fruit and contain fiber (they do, dont they :questionm), they wouldn't raise your blood sugar much, but I eat a couple and my bs soars  !

Eri's is pasta(even the right carb count)....she goes sky high and then plummets...SOOOO, we've sort of banned her from pasta (we let her have a bite here and there...she LOVES pasta...is half Sicilian and her papa owns a pizzeria, so THAT doesn't help...lol).
I've noticed that w/ this whole puberty thing, at a certain point, I can give her regular soda and straight normal chocolate(when lo...like 50 or below), and she will just keep on dropping and dropping until she is totally up and exercising...then she gets to normal. Sincerely weird, but possibly normal, right?
Before I went on the pump, baked potatoes, carrots and grapes would HOSE me. I would feel like **** almost immediately after ingesting any of those foods. I *don't* think I have a food that hoses me that should not hose me, except maybe Crystal Light...Which reminds me I was supposed to test that for Batty...

The bad thing about pasta is that I "tank" at the 2 hour interval. Weird, huh?? :frown:

Mashed potatoes, rice and pasta All make my blood soar. They usually tend to do it about a couple of hours after I eat them. Even though I've gotten better at the whole carb thing, I still mess up and have those highs afterward sometimes.

1) Arizona Diet Green Tea with Splenda - Drives your count sky high even though it appears that it shouldn't.
Here is the nutritional facts on Arizona Diet Green Tea. There is one thing that really sticks out. Even though Legally they can get away with stating the product contains <1g carbohydrate, the amount of sugars in the product tells the true story: Sugars=Carbohydrate, 1g carbo raises my sugar about 4.5mg/dL, 17g carbo would raise my sugar about 76.5mg/dL and that would be for an 8 oz serving. Servings per container=2, blood sugar rise per container= 153mg/dL.
Ingredients: Premium brewed green tea using filtered water, honey, citric acid, ascorbic acid, natural flavors, sucralose (Splenda Brand), acesulfame potassium, ginseng extract
Nutrition Facts: Serving size: 8 fl oz; Servings per container: 2; Amount per serving: Calories: 0; Total fat: 0g; Cholesterol: 0mg; Sodium: 20mg; Total carbohydrates: <1g; Dietary fiber: 0g; Sugars: 17g; Protein: 0g; Vitamin A: 0%; Vitamin C: 35%; Calcium: 0%; Iron: 0%

so far most of the items that have been posted are very high carb foods or have a high glycemic index.
Potatoes are a simple starch that should be considered the same as eating sugar.
Pasta is loaded with carbs
Grapes have tons of fruit sugars
BBQ sauces have a lot of sugars in them. the Asian BBQ sauces sometimes have MSG in them and it always raises my sugars.
The big one for me has been Sashimi (raw sushi) I think, whatever they marinate the meat in is what does it to me. Also, oddly enough, Diet Pepsi and Diet Sprite mess with my sugar, but Diet Coke and Diet 7-Up are just fine. Strange how that works....

Hot wings from any restaurant will drop my sugars like a rock. When I eat them is the ONLY time that I allow myself to partake of my beloved sweet tea. Small glass that is,,

For people having trouble with pasta, pizza etc. - you don't have to cut these out of your diet at all. If you find they elevate your bg, take more insulin. It's what your body would do anyway. Actually, in those cases you might find it helpful to split your dose. If I have pizza, I tend to take 2/3 of my usual bolus when I start eating, and then take the remaining 1/3 about 2 hours later. This helps compensate for the fact that the starch continues to be digested for some time after eating.
It also improves the effectiveness of your insulin - at higher doses, the blood sugar to unit ratio actuall changes to become less effective, so 8u followed by 4u 2 hours later will lower your bg more than 12u in one go.

Thanks, Deus, that is a great bit of info...and I know Eri will actually love to try that :) (as I said, she LOVES her pasta)...
Weird, w/ potatos and rice, she doesn't have that problem...and her favorite breakfast as of late is a baked potato w/ a basted egg over the top...and her sugars are fine after that...

I'm concerned for a lot of you. The issues raised in this thread so far are very basic parts of the general knowledge required for Diabetics to take care of their food vs. insulin intakes, or Carb to Insulin ratios. Have all of you had a decent class with a good dietician? If not, you need to go to one, or find some other source of information on all of this. Of course, we're all here to help each other, but some of you sound like you've never heard of any of this before? It just worries me that you're out there ill-prepared. :(

Those things have honey as a common ingredient.
I also have same problem with the things you mentioned.
When I eat asian foods now I do it at lunch on Saturday and then go shopping, or looking at the local mall to walk it off. That always works.

Have you tried the Dreamfields pasta or the new Barilla Plus pasta? Neither of those raise my BS a bit, and actually taste great!!

How in the WORLD is it legal to NOT consider 17g of sugar to be 17g of carbs?? I've never seen that before!

Mark,
are you sure you're looking at the right Arizona Green Tea? I see the "regular" Green Tea matches up with what you posted:
Total Carbohydrates 18 g
Dietary Fiber 0 g
Sugars 17 g
Protein 0 g
And the "diet" version:
Total Carbohydrates 1 g
Dietary Fiber 0 g
Sugars 1 g
Protein 0 g
NOTE:
Per 8 ounces, so do the math, everyone.
Admittedly, I bolus a weeeeee bit when I drink the diet stuff, but I don't drink it too often because for as good as it tastes, it makes me feel "blah"...

Here is the link where I got the info from. Arizona Tea Nutritional Facts (http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/arizona%5Ffresh%5Fchoice/facts.asp#2671) Must be a typo on that page. After reading sdkikikin's post, it did not make a whole lot of sense to me either. So I have been reading up on Label Laws and there can be a huge difference between carbohydrate listed and sugars listed (has to due with Natural sugars and added sugars). I assumed this was the difference that was shown in the Nutritional listing I quoted. But if you got yours right of the package, it makes a lot more sense.

Shrimp really messes my blood sugar up.
Hey Lowell, is it the shrimp, or the cocktail sauce? ;)
You have to be careful with certain brands of seafood or frozen seafood in general. The preservatives that they spray the fish down with can screw up your sugars. Now if this is from fresh or fresh-frozen shrimp, then it must just be a little crimson tide poisoning. J/K :)

Can the way a food affects you change, also? Or maybe its the brand.
Thomas never had a problem with school pizza, and we rarely get pizza at home (too many "ww points" for me). Last night we did order Domino's pizza. 1 1/2 hours later his bg was 103 and 4 hours later it was 320!!
With pasta he drops big time. I have him only account for half the carbs now.
Have all of you had a decent class with a good dietician? This is something I would like to go to. Thomas' endo never had him/us see a dietician.

Nan,
it depends on what is in the foods. Personally, I'd rather eat the box that a Domino's Pizza comes in, but they may have more sugar in their sauce, or a different make-up to their dough.

Coffee!
Some could argue it's the milk I put in it (perhaps?!) but above 6 cups a day, it will increase my BG significantly. Espresso is particularly lethal...

There's a thread somewhere around here that discusses the detrimental effect caffeine has on blood sugars (increases them)...

Funny; my daily caffeine intake in the AM doesn't seem to have an effect...I'm usually low by the time my mid-morning snack comes around.
As for my "rocket" food, it's Quaker Oatmeal Squares, which I have every day for breakfast. I need a shot of 35 units from my pen to cover it! (I AM a big eater, though, so it's more like 2 servings, according to the box.)

I know that when i eat pizza, i have to raise the insulin intake. Although i think that potatoes and pasta raise my bgls abit. When i eat fish with salad/vegetables i must lower by the insulin intake. Or i skyrocket down every single time.
Oh! Doritos used to realllllly mess me up, but for whatever reason, in the last couple years they seem to be more manageable...My theory is that they had the nutritional labelling wrong, so I was miscalculating...

Some people I know have had an issue with splenda.
For me although I do the proper carb counting, it still happens that everytime I have chocolate, or anything with a lot of sugar in it I go high. So now I stick to what could be considered a low GI dessert which I make myself. Surprisingly I have tried a low fat dessert (which is meant to be a substitute to ice cream) which makes my blood sugar go low if I inject for the full amount stated on the tub. So I have to always inject half the amount I would think I'd need.
I sonetimes have an issue with mashed potatoes and white pasta and bread. I think my body is calling out for me to eat a low GI diet!
Of all the fruits I have eaten recently, pineapple makes my blood sugar race up, and then down again. :s:

Just today I tried the jalapeno Pringles (my daughter got them for me . . . knew daddy loved spicy foods). My blood sugar stayed over 250 for over 5 hours from them! My guess is it's the same as you dealt with regarding Doritos.

My famous one a few years ago was brown bread- made me low directly after then sky high about two hours later.
