What do you change first?

If you can tell by your blood sugars that something is not working right with the pump/site/set/insulin, what do you change out first?

My blood sugars have been climbing since lunch time and I've been correcting, but they're still climbing, so obviously something is not right. There was a miniscule air bubble in the tubing, so during one correction, I did watch to make sure the bubble moved, so I think the pump is working correctly. So either the site, set or insulin is bad. I did a manual injection ( from a pen, not the same bottle of insulin that is in the pump) to correct and changed the infusion site. Should I also change out the insulin? It's a new bottle and has been working fine for the last week or so. I've had this set in for a little less than 2 days.

Yes its pretty close to changing the whole thing, isnt it? (3 days)
I would go ahead and change it as soon as possible. It could have been a tug, a pull, or just those WONDERFUL bubbles obstructing ilife, LOL.
Usually If I see that 2 hrs after I have changed it, my BS is rising, I know something is wrong and I dont allow it to go any higher. But I know how the anxiety and desperation can be.

change the infusion set first.

if it still doesn't work change the insulin.

The easy way to tell if it's the insulin is to take a shot with a syringe. If your sugar goes down then it's just the site. All pumpers beware!!!! Do not throw away your syringes. My site has gone bad or been ripped out of my side where I wasn't able to put in a new site till later. Having a bottle of insulin and a syring with you is helpful

I give a correction bolus, then check BS in hour...if not coming down then I change site and correct with a shot of insulin. It always works for me since sometimes I miss calculate

Something I never did until I read Meech and a few other people state that they did this: I'll change the site only now if I think I have a site problem...Used to be if I thought I had a site issues, I would change EVERYTHING: Reservoir, tubing, insertion set (and insulin, eeeesh). Now, I'll quick disconnect, take the insertion set from another set, "prime" it until it is filled with insulin and then insert that (and do a "normal" change from there).

But Scooter, from what you posted, it sound like you did the correct things so far...Also keep in mind that some foods you eat just keep "taking off" on you like a rocket ship.
