I have read in various places here that some of you split your lantus dose into two. Generally speaking it's a 24hr dose...so why have you split your dose and how did you go about changing it? I have recently stopped taking metformin ( the dose I'm able to handle is so low that it's not really doing anything) and am solely on lantus and am just wondering if there is a more effective way of utilizing it. Thanks...and yes my doctor knows.

Hi Liz, I split my Lantus into two doses. The reason is because it wasn't covering me the whole 24 hours - my sugars from about mid-day on would creep up and up and when we increased the Lantus dose it was too much and I'd wake up low all the time. So, we split it up. There's a bit of debate as to whether to split it into 50/50 doses or take more at night vs. morning or vice versa. I'm currently on 9 u at 7-8 p.m. and 8.5 u @ 7-8 a.m. and I have found overall that I do better on slightly less during the daytime (I assume because I'm more active but that's just my theory). I think if you start to have control issues and adjusting the single dose doesn't work then splitting it may indeed work better for you.
Let us know what you decide to do!

are there any type 1's on Intensive Management splitting thier dosage of Lantus?
a)how has it improved your levels?
b) do you still have a snack at 22:00, just smaller?
c) what time do you take Lantus in the morning?
