My triglycerides tested very high (over 500). My doctor wants to treat it with diet. He said if I lose the weight, that will probably take care of it. That number seems very high. Do you guys think this is o.k.? Or should I request some medication?

why NOT try diet for a month first? then if it doesn't work, take medication.
the way i see it, taking medication shouldn't be a substitute for good nutrition.
my father, who was a diabetic and took insuline every day, used to use saccarine in his coffee but would have pie a la mode!! he died when i was 15!
try diet first...in the long run, it's probably better to eat right than to keep on taking medication. i hear that in the long-term, cholesterol lowering drugs might affect your liver.
think about it.

Diet and exercise and also weight loss can improve your cholesterol numbers. All of them! It's worth a shot.
The very best to you.

Do you guys think this is o.k.?Depends, if he is talking about losing 20 or 30 pounds probably not going to help lower it from 500 much. Now if he is talking about losing 200 or 300 pounds it should help a lot. Or should I request some medication?Changing your diet would be the first choice. Like diabetes, taking medication for cholesterol once you have control over your weight becomes forever. Oh you might change the type, but your still going to be taking medication for it. So I would recomend losing the weight first to see where your at with it. Besides for some the medication does not help and has sides worse than tolerable. Exercise has a huge impact on cholesterol and should be considered as part of the diet. Which is also forever! :trytofly:
