I went back to the doctor yesterday for my first 3 month checkup since diagnoses. The only tests he has decided to do is the HBA1C, some urine test (for proteins) and my kidney function (and come back in three months...he doesn't even want to see me to let me know the test results). I thought at least he would check my fasting if not the GTT as that was my main problem to begin with.
The good news being, I won't be needing medications for now, although I'm not sure how he decided this with no tests other than my original ones.
What do your doctors test for at every checkup?

I see my Doctor, every month. Every three months, he do a battery of test (mostly bloodwork) that includes: A1c, Cholesterol, Liver functions (Fatty Liver).

If you are not satisfied with the service you are getting. Talk with your Doctor about your concerns. We have to be proactive with our health. I'm thankfull enought that I have a doctor that will listen to my concerns and we can talk about the short and long term treatment of my condition. You should do the same.

Numerous tests can be done on one blood draw. So even though you might think he is only doing an A1c the truth is there are more tests such as Cholesterol , BUN, Triglycerides etc..... that will be done. If needed ask for a copy of your lab results so you can check them out yourself. I always find them interesting. :)

Same here as Camjen... I always ask for a copy, too.

As you are in BC you are allowed to have your test results CC'ed to you. I get my doctor to CC ALL of my test results and BC Biomedical Labs send them to me by snail mail.

It can come in handy, just today I got food poisoning and ended up at the ER and I was able to take my most recent blood work with me so they had a comparison to work with.

I'm lucky - I'm dead stable so I see my Dr every six months. I also see my diabetes nurse every six months and she does urine proteins, hba1c, full liver function, foot examination and I have a retinal examination once a year.

In common with most diabetics I do my own blood glucose at least once a day (fasting) and more often as I feel I need to.
