Hi,

I have heard before that some people with diabetes lose weight without even trying. Does anyone know why this happens?

Thanks,
Carol/Florida

You loose weight without even trying if your sugars are out of control. I went to about 95 lbs right before I was diagnosed and I average about 155 pounds normally.

Hi Sandi,

Yes, I have heard this many times before, but I usually hear that diabetics gain weight easily...............just wandering why do the high sugars cause you to lose weight?

Thanks,
Carol

What happens with Type 2 diabetics is that once it is full swing and not being treated, the metabolism changes and the abdominal fat gets consumed and converted into water (as a bi-product) - hence the high level of urination - and so the weight comes off. Another bi-product is arterial fat which gets deposited and clogs the arteries and hence heart attack is one of the risks of untreated Type 2 diabetes. This is a (over-)simplified summary.

With T1 diabetes your pancreas is not producing insulin to utilies the sugar/carbs that you consume so instead your body burns fat for energy.
