I play golf once or twice a week and during our California "dry" heat we start playing at 7 am before the temps reach 100+ degrees. I "pull" my clubs (no carts on a hilly course) so I am getting lots of exercise. I eat breakfast and try to snack and drink my way through the round to keep my numbers up. Without doing so, I have dropped my blood sugars down into my 70's (normally around 120-130). In a typical round, I might drink 1-2 16 oz. of water for hydration, or if I really need a "kick start", a "lite" (12 grams of sugar) Cranberry Juice, or an apple juice box (28 grams of sugar). Snacks might be peanut butter filled pretzels (for the salt) or peanut butter crackers.

What do others use to maintain their "normal" blood sugar levels while exercising? If using a sports drink for the electrolytes, how do they impact your bs counts?

Judy, I have drank any number of sport-drinks while working out, everything from Gatorade to "Ultimate Orange" (banned by the US Olympic Committee), etc...as far as I am concerned they all taste bad, but Gatorade in particular seemed to get my blood sugars up real fast--Go figure, it's sweetened with glucose. And also, as a side effect, "sports drinks" seemed to make me have to pee more than if I had only drank pure water, even when my sugars were normal (I know, too much info, but if you are on the golf course, I thought I should mention that just in case you are anything like me).

I like Gatorade, but I usually drink Sugar free All Sport with zero carbs. I don't think my blood sugar is ever too low. lol
