Does anyone have any limks to reference material on the effect of heavy excercise on BG levels. I am consistently hitting 11's(200) and 12's(220) after karate practice. This is with no change in food intake, just my normal supper 3 hours before the workout. I am normally around the 6.5 mark with my post eating hitting 8. I know the excercise is good for me but if it is forcing my BG up over 10 I may be doing more harm than good. I currently take 500 mg metformin with supper and 500 mg before bed, thats it for the diabetes meds.
Thanks for the help.

Hi Steve,
This is just my opinion based on what I read in several newsgroups and books about your situation. When you're doing your heavy streneous exercise/karate, your body would need more energy than when your're not. However, when your body discovered that you didn't have enough, your lever started dumping glucose. With your condition that might be still insensitive to insulin, you experienced spiking in the glucose level. Some people experienced the same thing like you did, the way they solved their problems were taking more protein (you notice that I didn't say adding the carb. That's because I'm still phobia to carb....:)). Well, please read some more to gain more knowledge in controlling in god@#%!! disease. Take care.

Out of curiosity, how long after you finish practice do you test?

I usually test when I get home, so about 1/2 hour after class is over. I will try to remember to take my tester with me next class and test immidiately after class. These classes are in the evening so a 5:30 regular meal, then lots of water before and during class. Class runs from 8:00 to 9:30.

I would test after class before driving, when you get home, and an hour after class. Now if your still high at a hour after then another half hour later. Maybe then you can get a crude plot. It maybe a short term spike or it may raise it long term. To find out test test test. Also when driving anything that may make you respond quickly may cause a rise and extend the time of elevated bg's.

Hey Steve! :hello:
I don't really know why you are experiencing a spike like that after exercise :dontknow: . However, I do know that after a very intense workout, sometimes that will bring on a rise in your blood sugar. I think the body interprets intense exercise as stress and, if I recall correctly, it leads to an increase in the production stress hormones ...hence the spike. I know you probably don't want to tone things down a little...personally speaking, I like to feel like I have actually worked out :vroam: , but that might help. Or another option might be to increase your insulin slightly before working out (if you are on insulin). However, then you should be careful to bring sugar with you if you do drop too low.
IMO, Diabetes makes everything harder  , even something simple like going to the gym. You still have to be aware of your blood sugars before, during, and after exercise. It can be quite a pain, but I do feel like it's worth it. :proud:
