From the time I was diagnosed with diabetes I was told that alcohol is bad for this strange condition. Well, the doctors told me 1 cup will not harm me. Anyway and one cup was too much for me. So, I gave up on all alcohol drinks, beer, even wine (only sometimes very rare, I can barely drink a half glass), also sweet juices and beverage except for emergency purposes (HYPOS)! The only choice I had left was to continue to drink coffees, tea or soda….so that I’ll have something to drink when I go outside with my friends. What a choice?! :shot:
Before my DIABETES condition my favourite drink was vodka with juice or with lemon. I miss that sometimes. Six per night was my biggest record...to drink and to be just fine. What about you?
Cheers,
Natalia   :ciao:

When I go out I drink Gin & Tonic (slim line).
Luckily it was my favourite drink before I was diagnosed anyway :elefant:
When I'm out during the day though I tend to just have water with a slice of lemon or ice.... :dontknow: I can never think of anything else to have except diet soda but I don't really enjoy that.
Maybe when you go out you could ask for a vodka with Diet lemonade... would that be nice :hmmmm: I don't know coz I don't drink vodka.
I don't drink anywhere near as much as I used to, After Shocks used to be one of my favourites... I had one to many of them a few times

Hi, my first post here so forgive me for butting in! I came across these forums recently and its nice to find somewhere to chat where others are in the same boat!
As for diabetes, it has not stopped my social life and I still drink alcohol with no problems. Before I go on a night out I always have a good meal and my regular shot of insulin, and then check blood sugars before I go out drinking.
I stick to larger (it's what I prefer anyway) and avoid alcopops such as Smirnoff Ice as they are full of sugar.
When I get home from drinking I test my sugar straight away and usually find that it is still in my perfect target range. The sugar in the larger along with the effect of alcohol lowering blood sugar seem to cancel eahc other out.
I always ensure I have a bed time snack though to prevent me getting low blood sugars during the night.

Talk to Deus, that young fella has not eschewed alcohol in the slightest.
To be honest, before Dx'd I only had 1 or 2 drinks a year, and I haven't changed. Still have 1 or 2 drinks a year just keep an eye out for hypos and (shucks  ) I have to eat a little extra

I dont tend to drink, if I do its usually vodka and diet coke, just keep an eye on the sugars and eat a bit more to be on the safe side!

i cut back on my frinking before i was dxed anyways but when i do drink i stink to something like vodka and diet coke, just have to watch your sugars because you can go hypo and dont drink the sugary kool aid type drinks and you should be fine

My philosophy once I was diagnosed is 'everything in moderation' (apart from sugar - which is a big NO), including alcohol.
I now drink a lot less alcohol than I did before, but that's my choice - nothing to do with doctors.
The thing to remember is that even normal people show a wide variation in alcohol tolerance and their reaction to alcohol so you should decide what's right for you and your regime. :hello:
