I am quite new to this carb count thing so please bear with me.
I was looking at the bread we have in the house.
Grain Harvest Flax and Sunflower
per 2 slices
carbs 43
fibre 5
D'Italiano White Thick Cut
per 2 slices
carbs 35
fibre 2
So should I be eating the white bread??????
Doesn't sound right
Thanks

I may be wrong,,,
I believe the Atkins folks subtract fibre from carbs so:
White bread = 33 carbs
Flax/sunflower bread = 38 carbs
Not enough difference for me so I'll take the Flax/sunflower bread for probable better taste and for possibly some benefits from the flax. Extra fibre is good too.
But I am a bit biased as we never buy white bread at home.

Steve, it's not that you shouldn't have the white bread but it's just not good for you. the flax may have more carbs, but it's way more healthy for you in the long run. When you count your carbs you subtract fibre from the total. I prefere to eat BodyWise by Bens Breads. It has per 2 slices 18gr of carm and 4 gr of fibre. Therfore the total for the 2 is 14g of carb. For that 2 slices of flax bread you could have 5 slices of the body wise. It does taste a little different and the slices are thinner but I no longer like other breads. I hope this helps. :eating:

Ahhhh!! White Bread.
I once had a dietician tell me:
"..you're Dad's a woodworker.. ..he must have lots of sawdust and wood glue around... ..if you're going to eat whitebread, you'd be further ahead to go your Dad's workshop and mix up some sawdust &glue and eat it!!.. "
I was 18 at the time. I have never eaten whitebread since!!
Agree with CptHowdy and Liz32: go with the slightly higher carb, double the fibre non-white bread.
We typically do not eat enough fibre period. I believe the average healthy male should consume 30-35mg of dietary fibre daily.
The overall difference between your two bread choices (43-5 = 38gm versus 35-2 = 33gm. A small 5gm carb difference between the two choices, still needs to be accounted for. And you're getting 1/6 of your required fibre requirement as well!!

Even though the white bread has fewer carbs, the flaxseed bread is better for you. I find that if I eat white bread, my bs is higher than eating a whole grain bread.

I have always had the result of "ALL white things" (Bread, rice, potatoes, etc...) hit your blood sugar much faster. I would stick to the Flax. I personally like the Wheat bread because of the slow absorption. Does not affect my BS as much and it doesnt cause it to spike as much as white products too.

I am Scandinavian.
I have the 'white food gene' which means if a food isn't white to begin with you put enough white sauce on it until it is. (examples: creamed peas, creamed corn, mushroom soup in everything).
And of course white bread. When I first was diagnosed a year ago, that is the first thing I gave up. All white food. White bread, flour, potatoes, rice, sugar (white sauce) are all gone from my diet. And it helped a lot with my blood sugar too.
I have also lost a lot of weight. I made other changes later (no fried food either), but that was my first change.

Thanks All for the advice. If I understand correctly it is not only the number of carbs but the digestibility of the carbs that makes the difference.
Thanks
