View Full Version : High BS question

This morning I had a fasting BS of 136.
Had a hot tea, and made oatmeal with 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup milk, and a snacksized raisin box (about 1-2 tbsp.). Sweetened with Splenda.
1-1/2 hours later my BS was over 200! After 2+ hours it was 163.
Does anyone have any ideas what exactly made the BS shoot up so high?
It's my favorite breakfast, and I hate to give it up, especially since it's so great for cholesterol.
I've heard people say on here that Splenda can make BS go up. This is the only thing I use Splenda on, the rest of my stuff is sweetened with Sweet 'n Low.
I know I need to experiment with leaving out some stuff and checking and checking, but it would be nice to have at least an IDEA of what I'm doing wrong!
I know the 163 is OK, but it's not good to EVER have it go over 200, right?
:vollkomme
Thanks for any help!
Marye

I think it was mentioned before that Splenda can raise the BS. I could be wrong but maybe check thru the previous threads or maybe someone more intelligent will come along.

The oats, milk and raisins would have done it for me. I can tolerate very few carbs in the morning.

Raisins
miniature box (.5 oz) 11.09g
small box (1.5 oz) 34.05g
Oats
1/2 cup 51.88g
Milk
cup 11.42g
Splenda
1 tsp = 0.5 gm carb
Total meal = either 74.8g or 97.85
In either case, I would need to cover with either 5 or 6 units of Novolog/NovoRapid

I'm the same...That breakfast would send me sky high.

You shocked me a little with those carbs!!! I went back and checked the boxes. The oatmeal has 27g per 1/2 cup, the tiny raisin box has 11, and the 1 cup of milk has 12. So, total 60g. A LITTLE better anyway.
I guess that IS a bit high! I will cut out the raisins tomorrow and see if that makes a difference. The reason I like the oats in the morning is because they have MAJORLY cut my cholesterol, keeping my dr. from prescribing yet ANOTHER pill!
Does it make a difference WHEN the carbs are eaten? Because for lunch I had 2 pieces of soy/flaxseed toast with peanut butter on them, and a peach. That's around 45g. and my blood sugar was lower 2 hrs. after than before I ate lunch.
Do carbs affect you more in the mornings?? :dontknow:

One more question, because I'm starting to realize that I will have to break down and count carbs: (I'm type 2 BTW):
When you count the carbs in something, do you subtract the fiber, resulting in "net carbs"? Or do you only count the carbs?
I realize that with things like fruit, fiber would be kinda tough to figure out.
Thank you so much in advance. Even though I've been diagnosed since 1998, after stumbling upon this forum I feel like such a novice!
But, I need to get tighter control and I'm ready to take this on!

I have to agree with there being a lot of carbs (=Hblood sugar) in your breakfast.

Hiya Marye~ I usually subtract the fiber from my carb counts. And yeah... the raisins would be my downfall. lol I eat oatmeal (moistened and nuked with water), with Splenda and/or Stevia several mornings a week, and don't find that my bsl spikes. Hopefully cutting out the raisins will help.(?)

You might skip the raisins, or use fresh apple instead. I was told to avoid dried fruit by my dietician.
I find fresh chopped apple with the skin or fresh blueberries works better for me. I only ever eat 1/2 C of cooked oatmeal (never instant).

Typically, dried or preserved fruti has more carbs.
As for time of what you eat:
I can get away with eating more carbs if I know that I'm going to being doing physical activity. The more activity, the more carbs I can get away with.
Early this summer, I was transplanting trees in my yard, (digging them up in one place, and then digging hole in my yard and putting the trees in) and I had to adjust my insulin to carb ratio down on the days I was doing this since I was making unusual demands on my body's system.>>but then, some days I Just HAD to eat more  <<
Before I went on the pump, foods that had a high "glycemic index" value would put a HURTING on me, including potatoes of any sort, carrots and raisins. Raisins moreso than any other foods. So while you are trying to figure all this out, keep in mind some foods will raise your sugars faster and harder than others...Some plan around these foods, others embrace it as part of the madness. :hmmmm:

YAAAY!
BS after 2 hours (oatmeal & milk, without the raisins)=156!! :star:
That's good, right?
Fasting this morning was 130.
Raisins are from this moment on....out of my life! Small sacrifice for better control!
Thanks again for your insight. This forum is THE BEST!!

Much better...can use a little more improvement, but from where you were, MUCH better. Small steps, right? The whole "a journey of a thousand miles..." phrase truly applies here, and the fact you made this much of a change this fast is very encouraging.

I do exactly the same when I'm doing physical work. I'm not on insulin and therefore it's more difficult to alter medication in the short term, so I boost my sugar before I start and then gently snack every two hours.
I discovered that I needed this regime when I started out at 6 (108) one day and three hours later ended up at 3.5 (63) whilst displaying behaviour which greatly puzzled my companions :burnout:
