I used to fence competitively, and I'm thinking of getting back into it as a recreation.

Any fencers here? I'm wondering how it will impact bs. It's so stop and go, periods of waiting followed by short bursts of intense exertion, I'm not certain what to expect.

Well, I can usually be found "sitting" on a fence, trying to decide where the greenest grass is!....it's over there, or no wait! it's on the left, er, no right!... :)

ok, fine, but does more grassy greeness spike or drop the blood readings? Which leads me to wonder if cows can be diabetic, and if so, do they know which side of the grass to eat?

ah now, see!!! lol, maybe the cows that reach through the fence to eat the greener grass on the other side are the diabetic cows, hmmmmm? :D

fantastic -- now I have to worry that the fence around my yard is contributing to the long-term health complications of wandering diabetic bovines since it is depriving them of the magic grass they need. I can really feel for them, because it make me furious when I have to stand for 20 minutes in the pharmacy waiting for the sacred key bearer to come and unlock the cabinet where they hide my test strips. I guess I should feel more in tune with my steak tonight.

What sort of Fencing are you into?

Steel? Wood? Brick? or Stone?

{epee, foil, or saber?}

well, I always competed in the foil, but practiced foil and epee. Due to the changes to my body since this whole diabetes thing I suspect I may focus on epee, since the larger target area I'm fighting around my midsection won't be such a negative.

Otherwise, I like wrought iron but only afford vinyl.

Hi Travis,

I used to fence (oh so many years ago...lol - in the early 90's, pre-pump days), and it did seem to drop my blood sugar. This may or may not be the case for you, as each of us is so different. I also met my hubby  there. :) It was very enjoyable, and definitely is great exercise.

Fencing sounds so interesting. I'll tell ya what I do for exercise if you promise not to laugh. promise?? I play paintball. Does tend to drop my bgs some but then again, there is some running but also alot of standing still and hiding. LOL.

Hi Travis: I was into Fencing WAAAAAAAy back in my 20's and it did bring my sugars down because it is intense and gets your adrenalin rushing. Adren-
alin makes you stronger which uses more energy/glucose. When attacked I
take the fight mode. That would take more energy also. Great exercise/sport.
I do not know if being male/female may make a difference.

As with any Excellent exercise Regimen, fencing will indeed bring your B/G levels down---which means, unfortunately, you'll prbably have to force yourself to eat more ;)

The up side is, while you are eating more, you will be creating muscle mass which causes you to more efficiently metabolize your insulin.

Let's review all the advantages to excellent workout Regemine, shall we:

1. Get to Eat more
2. Use insulin better
3. Live longer
4. Live better

I'd say you should go for it.

Just wanted to add a little comment about #1...Yes, you might be able to eat more, but it also helps you in the great challenge of losing weight. So that's a great advantage to working out frequently :top:

I definitely agree w/ RZ  with everything else.

Excellent point.

I made the mistake :embarasse of assuming that anyone who fences much wouldn't be fight their weight as well as opponents.
