If you have diabetes, or simply want to be more aware of what you're ordering, the revised "Guide to Healthy Restaurant Eating" by Hope S. Warshaw (American Diabetes Association, $17.95) is a valuable resource. The 734-page paperback is packed with nutritional information and suggestions for the healthiest choices at 60 chain restaurants.
Some of the information is available online at the restaurants' Web sites, but the book pulls it together in a more usable form. Most of the chains are fast-food or quick-casual and supplied the nutritional information listed in the book. They include Chipotle, Panera Bread, Quiznos Subs and Krispy Kreme. McDonald's just announced it will put nutritional information on its food wrappers starting next year.
Just a handful of family-style restaurants make that information available online or disclose it to customers, meaning there's little, if anything, on such popular chains as Olive Garden, Chili's, Applebee's and Outback Steakhouse. So give Warshaw kudos for putting together a valuable guide nonetheless.
