VanDamage,

You are still probably in the honeymoon stage. You will know that it is over when your blood sugar doesn't come down again on it's own after meals. The only way to keep it in the target range is to inject insulin.

The fact that your blood sugar is rising do high after meals means that the disease is progressing. And you should inject insulin before meals to reduce the stress on your remaining beta cells. It should prolong your honeymoon period and make the adjustment to managing your blood sugar levels with insulin a lot easier.

During the honeymoon period, you should be injecting insulin to supplement naturally produced insulin where it is needed the most. Which, as you have observed, is after meals. So you should be bolusing with Humalog or Novalog before you eat.

Many doctors put T1s onto basal insulin initially, mainly because patients are less resistant to one injection a day. But there is a growing realisation that injecting before meals is far more appropriate. When your blood sugar levels between meals start increasing, you will have to start injecting basal inulin too.

Cheers,

Mark
