I am extremely confused as to what happened this afternoon/evening with my BG counts.
We were out today with the family so ended up having just a banana for lunch at around 12 pm.
We went out for a late lunch early dinner at 4pm. I had garlic shrimp, breaded shrimp, and a small shrimp pasta with a caesar salad. I alao was real bad and shared part of a vanilla cheesecake with my daughter.
I took a metformin at around 4:30. I noticed a real high ( unfortunately I did not have my test kit with me but it was definetely a high) at around 5 :30. I have found that since losing the weight my peak after eating happens around 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours after meals.
I got home at 6:30 and tested and was at 6.8 which seemed okay, I started feeling weird at around 8pm and tested again and was now up to 9.8. I hadn't eaten anything since the supper at 4 just a bottle of water. I tested again at 8:30 and was at 11.4. ( I haven't been over 10 in months!!!). I decided to do something about it so I had a glass of red wine and took the dog for a walk. I tested at 9:30 and was back down to 5.1. Now, 11:00pm, I need to head upstairs to test agin because I think I may be headed for a low.
Can anyone explain this. I thought I had a pretty good handle on this.
BTW I am a type 2 on 1500 mg of metformin daily.
Thanks for the support.

I would say it's the pasta. Pasta is high in fat and takes longer than 1-1.5 hours to peak after a meal. That is why you spiked up high an extra hour and two after the meal. The Pasta slowed the rest of the food down as well, I refuse to eat pasta anymore for that matter (plus I really truely haven't found a good place that can cook it the way I like it.) Maybe someone else that is type 2 can shed more light on this, but that's my theory on it.

Steve the same thing happens with me when I eat chinese...even if I go very light on the carbs and stick to mostly stir fry veggie dishes and meat. For some reason I peak at about 3 -3 1/2 hours after and it gives me one wicked headache! I can't explain it, I just know that the last two times I have chinese the same thing happened. Fun isn't it! I guess we just react differently to different things. For me it's chinese, for you it's pasta.

Steve, I'd say it was the pasta too. I find that pasta and anything that has a higher fat content, ie the shrimp and cheesecake will slow my spike and make it higher than usual. I am type 2, but on insulin. Hope this helps

Hi Steve,
I'm not so sure it was just the pasta and cheesecake.
You say you took your Metformin at 4:30? And, you pretty much skipped lunch? When did you take your Metformin in the morning? Even if you don't eat, your liver still keeps pumping out glucose - that's why we can have such high fasting BG levels.
If you ate breakfast & took your Metformin in the morning, then were on the go, not eating, etc. until 4pm - at which time you hit the breaded shrimp, pasta & cheesecake..... I've done similar things and my levels can skyrocket.
Next time, keep your kit with you and take some protein bars that you can munch on every couple of hours or so. It works for me! (I am a type 2 on 1500 mg of metformin daily also)

You guys are both misinformed about pasta!
Pasta on its own is NOT high in fat, pasta is very HIGH in CARBS, high in protein, and LOW in fat.The sauces and **** you add to pasta are what make it have a higher fat content. Pasta is loaded with complex carbs that take about as long as other complex carbs to digest and so on... You guys are right about pasta making your BG go up....no doubt about that!
And the amount of fat you eat won't drastically have an effect on your BG, fat is fat, its not sugar but it can be turned into energy (like sugar and carbs) when a demand for it is present. Cheesecake is high in fat and relatively high in carbs. I know T2's need to watch their fat intake but if it was up to me (i'm T1) i'd take the cheesecake over something thats loaded with sugar (and fat) like pies or store bought cakes

Okay, miss typed. Know that pasta is not high in fat. It's high in carbs. Point I was trying to make, that the pasta(carbs) slow the spike and the fat(cheesecake) doesn't help either.
