I'd like to know what people who are diabetics think about participating in endurance sports?? This would include running longer than a marathon, biking 100 miles or more, 1/2 or full ironman triathalon's or hiking for many days in the wilderness. Can a diabetic do it? Do you do it?

I don't see why not. I don't think it's a problem as long as you're prepared for it, know what to expect, carry the usual emergency supplies and use common sense. I've known a few folks with chronic conditions (diabetes, asthma) that do just fine in these sports. Though I don't run marathons or participate in triathalons, I plan on backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail in the near future. I'd also like to hike the tallest peaks in the western states and no way is my diabetes going to prevent me from doing any of these.

I say go for it all the way. :vroam: That is as long as you have your emergency supplies with you. (Something to bring the blood sugar up and something to bring it down.) And prepare your body physically. In other words use common sense and enjoy!!
I don't do it, but am working towards some diabetic walks and bike rides for the summer and fall. Common sense is the reason I don't do it. I am wayyyyyy overweight and out of shape. I got to work on that first.
By the way, :handkiss: thank you everyone for the encouragement you give me without even knowing you are doing it. You are my inspiration. :knuddel:
The MM 508 video I got years ago had some dude that was into triathalons, I believe. If diabetics can manage that, it's not outside the realm of possibilities to manage ultra-endurance sports.

Haven't ran further than a marathon, but have biked a century (100 miles), and done many, many, week long backpacking trips in the sierras. I would like to compete in a full tri-athalon someday. No doubt it's do able for a diabetic.
