Has anybody or know anybody that has rapidly lost thier hair. I used to have a full head of thick hair, and in the past month have lost a great deal of hair including my eyebrows. My sugars are in decent control, I have been to my primary doc, endo, and 2 dermotologists, nobody seems to know what is wrong. They have done all sorts of blood tests and such but still no answers. It is really starting to frustrate me.

Hi Scott,
Are you on any medications? I started losing my thick hair about 7 years ago, this was after I started on several medications, including diabetes and heart. My hair got so thin, you could see my scalp. No one knew exactly
what caused it, but my doctor seemed to think it had more to do with the diabetes. The good thing is, though my hair will never return to it's former glory, it has been getting thicker in the last few years, which I think has something to do with my body adjusting to all the medications.

I lost some of my hair because of my thyroid disease. That's the only cause of hair loss I know associated with this disease.

The only medication I am on and have been on for years is Lisineprol for high blood pressure. I tested negative for thyroid.
I can't remember the name of it, but there is an autoimmune condition that causes hair to fall out. I read in your profile that you're type 1 which is an autoimmune disease. This could be your problem since if you have one autoimmune problem, you are likely to have others.
I have a niece who has the hair condition. She has a type 1 sister, but she does not have diabetes herself. The niece had very thin hair in her late teens. It is still thinner than normal, but it is a lot thicker than it used to be.
I'll do a bit of searching on the net to see if I can find out what it's called.

Okay, that didn't take long. If you wish to look it up, the condition is called alopecia. One of the first things I read is that alopecia can also cause the hair from the eyebrows to fall out. It affects about 2% of the population.
Try this link if you wish: http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/962131879.html There are many others.

I really appreciate the suggestions, unfortunatly but fortunatly I have tested negative for all other autoimmune disseses including, lupus, hyperthyroid and alopecia. I have seen 3 different dermotologists and finally they have perscribed me with a steroid cream to put on my head and eybrows. Hair seems to be thickening. I will keep you guys updated.

I lost A LOT of hair when I was first diagnosed 11 years ago....but they said it was because of stress. It doesn't soun as bad as yours is, though.

Hi Scott!
I too lost a lot of hair prior to and just after being diagnosed. I believe it was the stress of being sick (even though I didn't know--my body did!) that caused it. Fortunately I have very thick hair to begin with, so I don't look likeI am finding six weeks on treatment that much less comes out in the shower. Sometimes stress can be a delayed reaction. Hopefully it will stop soon and grow back!
