I've been having really good control. When I wake up I'm 95-105. 2hrs after eating usually 110. It's been this way for that last couple of months. Yesterday I woke up at 80. Thought it was odd, couldn't find anything out of the ordinary from the day before, so I thought it was just a fluke. This am I woke up at 65. I don't know why.

I'm on 16u Lantus in the evening and 1u/15g carbs of Humalog. I keep to a schedule when eating and doing meds. Nothing varied.

Am I over-reacting about the am low or is this just one of those things.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could it be the Somogyi effect?

Val, I have been having the same problem!! On friday night it started for me. Granted I was up a lot later helping move stuff, but not much more exercise then usual (ie a 5 mile run during the day). 15-30g of carb wouldn't have been shocking but I had to take over 300g of carbs in a 6 hr period and still woke up at 70! I think thats the most I have ever had to take supplementally for my basil. I figured it was a fluke with the move so I continued to do 35 units and again I went super low. I've been on 30 U's the past two days. It worked fine the first day, but right now my ratio is all messed up and I am at 350 right now  . Sorry I don't have any good advise, but I feel your frustration.

Cinnabon, I don't think this is it. I've had no change in meds and I'm very consistent in counting carbs, weighing food and dosing accordingly.

Thanks for the help.

Maybe try eating a little more before bed to raise your pre-sleep bg?

The Somogyi effect is quite interesting! I swear I learn something new here everytime I visit.

One reading does not a pattern make, or even two, but they may be the beginning of a pattern. Keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or repeats a couple more times, you may need your basal Lantus adjusted.

Val,

Val like Valerie or Val like Val Kilmer? Only reason I ask is 'cause, could be that it's female hormones that are mucking things up for you. (If you're female that is)

Seems I can't keep my numbers down the week before a period, and then can't get them up a few days after it starts. Is this corresponding with any particular time of the month?

Erin,

It's Valerie and it doesn't seem to be related to that time of the month.

I know its hard, but something is happening to your BS throughout the night. I would really think about getting up around 3 am and see where your BS is at this point of the night. Close monitoring is the true way to pinpoint this problem, Val.

But if it appears to be consistent, it could be your basal Lantus dose. I was on 24 units Lantus for 2 1/2 years without realizing it was dropping me super low every night and causing me to wake 50-60 on the way into a rebound. Now I'm on 14 units and my mornings aren't low anymore - I don't have any explanation for why my dose has dropped, but that could be happening with you, for whatever reason. :dontknow: Try a 3am test like Cinnabon suggested and let us know!

I agree...sometimes there's not really an explanation for why things are as they are. It's just one of those Diabetes Mysteries :questionm. I would continue to test frequently and log your readings carefully, including what you've been eating and your activity at each time period. If you notice a pattern, call your doctor and see if your insulin can be adjusted. Btw, is it possible that you've lost weight? I know you have been being more careful with what you've been eating and if you've lost weight, you could be more sensitive to the insulin. I don't know, just a thought.

Anyway...I wouldn't worry about it too much, but like it was mentioned, continue to be extra observant of your readings.

Take Care

Ok not time of the month related... on to the other usual suspects:

Have you been drinking at all? Not crazy binge drinking or anything but even just a glass of wine or two might cause you to drop over the night.

How long have you been on Lantus? Sometimes it takes a while for Lantus to take its full effect, so you might need less.

Any exercise more than normal? Particularly slow burn exercise like long leisurely walks or stuff you don't notice like cleaning the bathtub.

If it's not that, check the rings of Saturn, if they're out of alignment again, things will go back to normal in a few days, without us ever figuring out what went wrong.

I haven't been drinking, maybe I should start? j/k

I've been on Lantus since April.

I strenght train 3 times a week and usually go to they gym every day. Also I've been walking outside. It has become colder here, could that have any affect?

I bet it's the rings of Saturn, that is causing this problem.:D

I got up at 3am and checked and I was 72. I got up at 4:30am, my usual time and was 67. I don't have any lows during the day.

The only other thing that has changed is I quit smoking 3 weeks ago. Could this have some affect?

This is frustrating.

I think you will have your answer in finding a way to success dully lower your dose in the PM. Of course consult this w/ your doctor and now give him proof that you are catching your lows from 3 am on. Have you given the "eating a snack before bed" a try?
