Hello, I received a stunning call in the middle of a business luncheon from my doctor's nurse sometime the last week of November. It seems I am pre-diabetic. I had my first meeting with the dietician on December 19th and have been put on a 1500 calorie a day diet with orders to lose 10 pounds or more. My count was 104 (still don't know exactly what that means) and was told at this point I can get control with diet and exercise. Its still pretty scary. My grandmother was a type II diebetic and was eventually on insulin. Two of my mother's sisters are also type II and have been told if they don't watch their diet, insulin will be in their near future.

I feel I am extremely lucky to have caught it at this point. I am a 48 year old woman, about 25 pounds overweight. I have had symptoms; extreme thirst, shaky in the morning, light headed after going too long without eating, or sluggishness and sleepy if not eating correctly.

I am really excited about finding this forum and hope to learn a lot and also share what I've learned along with getting and providing support. Sticking to a 1500 calorie a day diet for the rest of my life sounds a little scary, and I have to start up with an exercise program. I'm trying to look at it as a wake-up call to getting myself in shape. I hope by next year to be in better shape than I have ever been.

Hello to all!

Welcome Sherry, glad you found us. Sounds like you're doing the right things to get a handle on your diabetes. It's a good thing you met with a dietican, they'll help you with your diet. There will be alot of info to learn, but it does become easier. Once your blood sugar is stabilized and your diet is modified, you will start to feel much better.

Hope you visit often.

Welcome!! I am new here also, i wish i had caught it in that stage.. now looking back i had the same symptoms last year! Keep it up, i am 6'1 320 pounds, and i eat 1500 calories a lot of days! you can do it, make sure you fit your snacks in, it will help you from becoming hypo! and a snack before you go to bed, i have, either a piece of beef jerkey, or a tablespoon of cottage cheese, or a piece of low fat cheese and my morning numbers are pretty good! i would think, that if you lose the 10 pounds start walking everyday, and watch the carbs, you will be able to increase your calories..

Welcome! I am pre-diabetic also! I am much more overweight than you are, but since being diagnosed a year ago, I have started being more careful what I eat and drink, and have lost 35 pounds! I have a lot more to go, but my Dr. is very pleased, and I am losing at a slow pace. Start out with simple things like parking your car at the far end of the parking lot instead of up close, and you will see a difference in your stamina. I also cut out sugared drinks, although I sometimes cheat and have sweet tea. I try and pile more veggies on my plate instead meat or starches, and I try not to eat after 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening. You can do it, and these fine folks here are ready to help!

Hi! Welcome, I too am more closely defined a pre-diabetic. I am still at the point where I can control it through diet and exercise. I was diagnosed over a year ago. Both my parents have been diagnosed as type 2. You have found a great place for information and support. I look forward to getting to know you!
