View Full Version : how should I handle my insurance?

I'll probably get a job in a month or two that will allow me to join a group health plan. I have group insurance right now, but I don't trust them and have paid for everything myself. (they challenged my very first doctor visit!)
anyway, when I get this new insurance, should I fill in type 1 diabetes on the application? My current one never asked, but I have a feeling that this next one will. I know that the law says you can't be dropped from a group plan due to a pre-existing condition, and I know that they can make you wait a year to receive coverage. I'm not as sure if they can deny it altogether.
And, suppose I were in a car wreck or had a non-diabetic cause for hospitialization. would they be able to deny a claim for that, knowing that I'm a diabetic? Call me cynical, but I'm worried that they will use anything in their power to take my money and deny my claims due to all the corruption.
By the way, since my diagnosis with IDDM, my highest recorded HB1AC was 6.2, and I've had no hospitalizations for hypos. No complications as of yet. Not that they care, but can that fact work to my favor at all?

Be honest with them and you have documentation of lab results. I am not sure how it works but at one point I changed insurances due to a job and nothing changed for me. I picked up coverage from the very day....so sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

It is technically illegal for health insurance to deny one for a pre-existing condition. If that was legal there would be millions of people that wouldn't get the medicines they needed and hospital bills would pile up. Insurance companies can say they won't treat you for pre-existing stuff, but I've yet to have one actually do that to me. If they try it, then you can just complain up a storm or get your doctor to bill you as a new patient which then causes the insurance to go nuts and pay even more.

Hey Mdude: It would depend on the Company you will be working
for and the Insurance/Health Plan criteria. I'd surely read every word of
the Benefits Handbook you would be given. I'm sorry to hear that you had
a problem with the group Insurance;we've had a few and the only problem
we had was if the Pharmacist forgot to put our names, prescription #'s or
date on the receipt, the Insurance Company would of course send those without back and we would just have to put our name, etc. on it and send them back. Stupid system. But that was way back when we had to send in the receipts. For some time we've had the card the Pharmacist just runs through the machine, "Yes, it's covered" and we pay the $2.00 for each prescription.
If it asks what conditions/diseases then of course you have to put Diabetes. Type 1, I guess that's up to you. On ours they asked what pre-
scriptions and of course then they know what you have anyways. I also
say that they cannot deny you. I didn't need any lab tests results, just the drugs I was on and my Drs. names and addresses.
Ours didn't ask about any A1c's etc, so I don't think it makes a difference.
If you want to add it into a comment space, feel free. As far as car accident,
etc., I never thought of that one, I'll have to look that one up. My Hubbie has other Insurance for himself or if he kicks off. :( Hopefully, not
before me. As I recall it would cost a small fortune for me(2 yrs. ago I checked). Oh ya, it wasn't the Type 1 Diabetes(as long as my control was okay), it was the drug I was on for Rheumatoid(since it causes Cancer), that was also a private company. My Hubbies job Insurances don't care. But you are the main one so that would be different. It all depends on the Company you work for and the Insurance the people there get together on or Health Plan. < I'm still a bit iffy on that. Sorry, this is so long. Just try and relax, there are many Good Insurance Companies out there.
I don't know about the Health Plan though, they should be Good also. We
were covered within 3 or 6 mths. I forget now. Good Luck To You.
