As I have protein in my urine should I eat more or less protein in my diet?

I'm confused :stupido3:

You should not have more than 150 mg/dl in your urine. Anything under that is actually healthy/normal/fine. If you are over that, then eating less protein is just a cover up for a medical problem that you may have. THere are many medical problems related from protein in the urine and you should consult a doctor if you have high levels of it. I hope that gives you a simple answer. So what is your level?

Mine is 200...but my doctor said it should be 3 or below. Huh??? How should it be less than 3? Now I'm REALLY confused.

I'm taking meds for high blood pressure & once that is stabilised it I think it should help the protein problem, right?

Georgia,
What kind of protien? Is it Micro Albumin Protien, or full Protien (proteinuria)that are being leaked out? Special blood pressure meds called Ace Inhibitors help uProtien(micro Albumin). I was showing traces of micro albumin, and Zestril, an Ace Inhibitor, brought it back to normal. If you have Protienuria the best thing you can do is control high blood pressure and glucose levels to stop this.

Thanks for your reply BriOnH. To be honest I don't know whether it is Micro Albumin or Proteinuria - although I presume it is the latter as the doctor has prescribed tablets to bring my bp down.

I would suggest maybe limiting your salt intake if you overdo it, that might help your high blood pressure (in addition to the meds) and hopefully your proteinuria. I wouldn't do a super high-protein diet or anything, it might put too much burden on your kidneys, but whether it's helpful to follow a low-protein diet for the time being, I'm not sure. I would think so... maybe try limiting your protein intake to 10-20% of your total calories? :dontknow:

0-150 mg/dl is normal, not sure what your doc means by less than 3... maybe he was just talking plain old simple grams? because I think when you're excreting 2+ grams of protein/day, you're showing kidney problems.

I don't add salt to anything anymore, I used to but I stopped it when I went on the Methyldopa. I'm not sure what my doctor means by 3 & under - will ask him at my appt next week. Thanks jen_slc

I once had protein in my urine but it cleared up of it's own accord. It sounds like yours is connected to your hypertension and, therefore, your doctor is doing the right thing.
