Hello all. I've been registered on here for a while but don't think I've posted in a dog's age..... if ever even though I read the forums! So I thought I'd start fresh with a new year. ;)
I recently switched from syringes and vials for my insulin (i'm old school, I know- I've just turned 30!!! and have had Type 1 for almost 23 years) and am now using Humapens or whatever they are called. My question is, what the heck can i carry them around in? I need two pens (for Humalog and Huminlin N) but my old case I have is too small.
Are there any stores or online shops out there that sell bags or accessories for diabetics? I'd like one big enough for my pens and my blood monitor.

I just carry my Novopen (pretty sure its the same as the humapen?) in my pocket.
I saw a pretty neat "Diabetic Organizer" in Target the other day... but I would never buy it. I have a cute little Clinque make up case that does the job nicely. I'd go check out the cosmetic counter first... the cases they have there will be prettier and probably cheaper. If that fails it shouldn't be too hard to find a "diabetic organizer"

I got a travel diabetic organizer for Christmas. It has spaces for about everything you could need, and my Novolog pen fits just fine. It had the tags still on it, so I know it was from Walmart and cost $6.95.

Hmmm, maybe I'll try Walmart. I don't think a Clinique bag would work for me, you know, being a guy and all. ;)

Oh, c'mon man, being "metro-sexual" is so trendy today.
:D
I'm with Brian on this one, though: I carry mine around like a pen in my pocket. The only drawback is if you don't have a real pen and someone asks to borrow your "pen".

You guys are pretty lucky that you have the ability to go to Wal mart to get a diabetic organizer. Out here in Taiwan that stuff is pretty much nonexistant. I would love to be able to find something that can store my meter and one pen, in a small inconspicuous bag of some sort. I guess I'll have to check on e-bay.

Here's another question..... some of you say you carry it around in your pocket. Do you leave the needle on the pen, or carry that too? The reason I ask is that it seems to me that my insulin leaks out of the needle when it's attached to the pen (which makes sense, since that's where it comes out!)

I carry my pen in a backpack without the needle. The insulin will leak out if you leave the needle attached. I put the cap back on the needle and then put in a pocket in my backpack.

Thanks, I guess I'll have to do the same. Not as neat and tidy as the ads would have you believe, but I guess it's still better then whipping out a syringe and vial in a restuarant... ;)

oops :embarasse
Well... you don't have to get a PINK one or anything... :T

Never leave the needle in anything attached, ever. Too many bad things can happen from little itty-bitty germies getting on the needle (and then into you when you inject), to accidentally stabbing yourself or someone else, to insulin leaking out--Insulin stinks, and according to the papers that come with the pen, leaking insulin can affect your dosing. I've never figured the last part out, but okay...:dontknow:

Didn't do one, for a number of reasons. I'm probably going to do one tonight.

I think the dosing is for the mixed insulin, where one type of insulin may be more prone to leak out the needle, thereby affecting the ratio of the two insulins.
I take 2 types, so no problems here, aside from having to jab myself twice in the mornings........

I wish they had lantus pens here in canada! I have to use the syringe deal which for the most part doesn't bother me although you do get the odd funny look. :captain:

I always used to take my insulin into the bathroom stall for that very reason. If I was in a weird mood, I'd do it in the car before going in the restaurant and try to freak out the little old ladies walking around. ;)
Liz, I'm originally from Lower Sackville, good to see another Bluenoser!
