Used the search feature. Read 100 posts on Novalog and didn't see this.

Humilin R is what I am switching from, which lasts roughly 4 hours for me.

Novalog acts faster -- but does it last longer or shorter than 4 hours?

Here is a chart I found on comparing the types of insulins and how long they last...

http://www.clevelandclinic.org/health/health-info/docs/3300/3376.asp?index=11452

It shows R takes 5-8 hours for it to fully be out and Novolog takes 3-5 hours. Therefore on a rough guess I'd say Novolog will last about 3 hours for you.

Is there any onther types of insulin besides humalog that act even quicker? i really would be interested....

Im on NPH and humalog

I would like to pack most of my starches in on Bfast and dinner... and im taking amost 9 units of at Breakfast and dinner..but i still find myslf going in the 350s range 1 hour after, but then 4 hours later im dipping like crazy so i have to have another snack.

i Like my regin now but i would like to level off the highs after Breakfast and dinner.... and lessin the low numbers 3-4 hours later

Any suggestions?

How much & what type of carbs are you eating? Maybe you need to reduce your carb intake for a while - this will reduce your insulin dose requirement & should make it easier to get the insulin ratio balanced to avoid/minimize both the 1 hour peak and the 4 hour dip. Once you've achieved this, then experiment by including carbs again in small quantities until you figure out how to balance everything.

At this current time no. The main reason is because Humalog currently most mimics the human body in the amount of time it takes for food to be digested. If they had anything that acted faster, then the peak of the insulin may be sooner than the peak of the food, which could be helpful for some people, but the population of that is really so small that it's not fully worth creating an insulin for yet.

I think you stated your own problem right there. I put the blame on the NPH. If you are running extremely high at the 1 hour mark, then that means you need more humalog for that meal. I take it you don't carb count at all and you pretty much give the same shot and eat the same food (or amounts of) every day?

The reason I'd say you have that drop 4 hours later is because that is almost near the peak of the NPH. Do you eat lunch? Have you tested what you are running around lunch time? But I personally think it has fully to do with the NPH causing you to go low. Have you talked to a doctor about maybe switching to something else like Lantus?
