View Full Version : How stupid is this?

Yesterday morning I was doing my usual dose of insulin. 31 units of Lantus, and six units of humalog. I was talking to the DW while I was doing it, and was not paying proper attention. Well don't you just know it, I injected 31 units of humalog (OH OH!).
Within half an hour, my BGL was 25. I drank three eight ounce glasses of orange juice, and had DW take me to the emergency room (I was in a panic). By the time I got there, my BGL was 68! (about an hour and a half after dosing)
They just gave me some OJ and said hang around until about 11am. Well, it worked perfectly. It's just hard to imagine that I could consume enough OJ to get me out of that situation. Funny part though is that I never did take my Lantus yesterday, and was able to maintain a good BGL until very early this morning.
After 22 years, that is the first time I ever did something like that. Boy, what a scare!
I just had to let the entire world know how stupid I am LOL!

You aren't the only one that has done that. I'm sure I have done it, but I don't remember. I do know some others on here have done it as well. It's a true and honest mistake. Just a good thing that you knew you did it and caught it.

I've done that too so you're way behind me in the stoopid line. I stayed up the next 4 hours testing every half hour and drinking lotsa cola. I've never drank so much in my life and was about ready to burst.
Glad you realized what you'd done and quickly took appropriate action.

I've never done this myself...which is a bit surprising, as I can be a bit absent minded at times . I always joke that it would be a good excuse to eat :eating:, but the more I think about it, I think it would be a big pain. Plus, it's probably kind of a scary feeling :afraid:.
Glad that you are okay :)

Whew! I don't think I could drink that much OJ if I had a funnel! Glad to hear you're ok.

You could have just figured out how many carbs 31 units would be for you.. number of carbs for a meal / number or units taken for that meal * 31 and you would have been fine. For me that would have been 310 carbs. heh

I did something like this with the pump last month. I was counting carbs and instead of entering my 35 carbs into my pump and by blood sugar to see what I should bolas for the meal I entered 35 units of insulin and hit okay. Did not think twice about it unitl about 15min later when I started to feel it.
Don't you have a MAX Bolus on your pump?
I have my 511 set at 5 units , it won't let me bolus more unless I reset.

Not stupid at all. Just a normal human being. At least I hope that is the case, because I have done it. The difference was I didn't catch it until I was very low. I had to think back through my routine and remember I reversed something. (I just didn't admit it to the world. I should have--I wouldn't have felt near as stupid if I knew so many others have done it.)
Thanks for sharing. See, many of the most intelligent on the forum have done it.

I never realized that one cup of OJ has 100 grams of carbs. I usually only drink it in very small quantities anyway. But the three glasses I drank was enough with a ratio of ten to one. So I guess that is why I was OK. I'm just used to the usual 5-10 units which sometimes drives me low later. I didn't even think of the fact that I could counter-act 31 units of humalog!
All I could think of was that rich guy that killed his wife with insulin :stupido: I was convinced I was going to die. I'm glad I'm not the only one who ever did this. You folks made me feel a lot better. Thanks!

As far as I know, OJ is only about 40 carbs per 8 oz glass. But it is alot.
Yup, I've done that too. (Well, did something similar, switched my regular and NPH) 'cept I didn't realize it and ended up in quite a tight spot. Thank god for my blessed mother and glucagon injections.

I did that once (well prolly more...!!) when i was about 14- took 50 units if humalog instead of 10! Dont know how i managed it, took a packet of glucose tablets and was fine. Atleast u realised and did something about it

You're right. I went to some carb counting site, and that is what they had listed. I went back and looked at the container I used, and it said 38 grams per 8 oz.

Well 5 units will drop my glucose by 500 points or cover 150 carbs,

i often worry about mistaking my lantus for novo rapid, i check, check and check again but it is impractable to think i wont slip up one day, one thing i have noticed is that people on pumps here have excellent a1c's in the 5.whatever range is impossible i think.... for my lifestyle and the insulin i take, i am too volatile maybe i should consider pumping any thoughts?

Hmm.. I have never heard of orange juice that was 40g of carb. The most carbs I have ever seen in a glass of orange juice was 30g / 8 oz which was Odwalla. Simply orange, Florida's natural and tropicana all have approx 25 / 8 oz. I am assuming you guys are referring to concentrated orange juice which would typically have more carbs because of added sugar.

This problem is simple to avoid. Just use a pen instead of vile for rapid, and a syringe for Lantus.
very good idea, i use blue capped needles for my lantus and regular orange capped needles for my novo rapid and it works as a good check

Not always an option. I would love to have pens for my rapid , but the program I get insulin thru only gives me viles and syringes as an option. ( I did love those pens when I had insurnace to cover my supplies )
So I double check when taking my shots, have thought I made a mistake and do lots of testing.

How about one better.... How about waking up, doing your insulin, then an hour or so later forget that you've already done your insulin and do it again? I've done that a few times. Good way to eat two breakfasts instead of one!
I have also doubted my memory like that and gone the other way, not doing ANY insulin until it creeps up to around 20 by noon and then I realized I must not have done it at all.
Ahhh, absent mindedness........

I always do that at the end of the day... forget whether I've taken my evening Lantus. That's a little harder to deal with because Lantus doesn't have a strong immediate effect. So, do I chance taking double and going to bed, skip it and wake up very high, or stay up (very) late to monitor? That's usually when I end up playing Solitaire or Shanghai on the computer til after midnight.
cheers,

Wow, I've made all of these mistakes over the years! :albertein It is so nice to find out you're not alone. I'm glad I admitted it in a public forum :joyman:

Or how about being a 12 year old girl in the 6th grade (you know at the time you are mortally afraid of EVER being seen with your parents) and having your mother show up at school around 10 am.
She has the syringe you drew up and left on the kitchen table, next to your empty cereal bowl.
oops.

I'm not on insulin except Lantus now but I've forgotten to take my pills in the morning or forgot to take my evening pills alot. I usually catch it before anything happens but then I feel stupid. I usually write it down when I take them so I can go back and look to see if I took them. I think memory is going now that I'm getting older.

That's one of the resons why I prefer to use a pen for the fast acting and a syringe for the Lantus. I don't get them mixed up!
When I do use a fast acting from a syrings, like when I get the free vial from the Doctor, I use two different sized syringes.
