Good morining, my name is Bobbie and I am new to this group. I have not been diagnosed with diabetes, however, I have some real concerns. I use the VA for my medical care, twice now I have had glucose in my fasting urine. I am being told that this is not a problem, my concern is that about 20 years ago I was diagnosed as hypoglycimic, also my mother developed type 2 diabetes (at about the age I am now). The VA has never requested that a GTT be done, I have been told that the 2hr test is sufficient.
I have also never heard of a benign urine glucose in a fasting sample. Anyone out there able to allay my concerns?
Thanks,
Bobbie

Up to 0.8 mmol/l (15 mg/dl) are indeed normal. If you have more trhan this then
my best guess would be some sort of kidney problem so your kidneys are extracting glucose when it is way below the normal threshold levels of about 10 mmol/l. This could acount for the hypoglycaemia. It may be something the doctor already knows about from earlier investigations which is why you're being told it's normal.

Glucose usually doesn't spill into the urine unless the blood glucose (BG) level is > 180 mg/dl.
Current guidelines for diagnosis of diabetes is fasting BG level between 126 & 200 mg/dl on two seperate occasions (two different tests) or a single level >200 mg/dl.
I'd try to get a blood test.
If you know anyone who is diabetic, perhaps they would let you use their monitor to test yourself.
