Hello to everyone here at Diabetes Forum. My name is Grant and I live in Yorkshire, England and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in September 2005. I am still not sure about many aspects of this condition. I am taking Metformin 500mg twice daily, and have been given my own blood sugar testing kit to check my sugar levels, which have maintained around 6-12. The day I went into hospital and was Diagnosed type 2 diabetic, my sugar levels were 18!
I have joined DiabetesForums.com in hope to meet many other people in the same boat as myself and make some great friends.
Next wednesday I am going for tests with my Diabetic Nurse. I know these include blood and urine tests, but can anyone please advise me as to what else to expect?
Kindest regards :wavey:

Welcome to the forums. As for the test....well the blood test they usually give requires blood taken from the arm and usually involves 3 to 4 vials.....and they run a multitude of test from them. Cholesterol, AIC etc. I have a 24 hour urine test done once a year and they check protein level etc...how the kidneys are functioning at that time. I am type 1 so there may be different test done for T2 which I am sure someone here will tell you about. Good luck with managing your diabetes and once again welcome

Hi Belinda :) I had two small tubes of blood taken from my left arm yesterday morning, which is being sent for tests and should get my results back in time for next Wednesday when I visit the Diabetic Nurse.
I have visited a Podiatrician already last month, and she removed a couple calluses from the bottoms of my big toes and gave my feet certain prod/poke tests with a metal/plastic sticks. My feet are "low risk" but I was told I had a corn in one of the toes which I need to keep an eye on, so hopefully I can get that checked on Wednesday. I know my feet should be checked constantly with being diabetic.
I've been reading up on tests that are run on diabetics and was just wondering if a T2 diabetic here could tell me more about what to expect from an appointment with the Diabetic Nurse.
Thanks for your kind words Belinda :wavey:

Hello Grant and welcome. Seems like treatment is a bit different here, than in England. I see my doctor every 3 months and he says "How's your feet?" and I say "OK." and that's the end of it. :) It may be different for others, but I have a A1C, every 6 months, and my treatment is based on those results. I have only had the urine test a couple of times over the years, so maybe there is a difference for how they treat Type 1. Really there are more Knowledgeable people on the forum, who can help you, I just like to greet people!:wavey:

Penny - it's nice to meet you! :tee:
Thank you for your kind words, it just feels nice to come somewhere where I can discuss diabetes with people who understand and I can make friends in the process.
When I saw the doctor on Thursday she told me that all the tests I am to have this coming Wednesday should have been done when I was first admitted to hospital and diagnosed as diabetic. But when you rely on the hospital, nothing gets done as quickly as you may like.
So it's 4 months later and it feels like the diabetes may have gained 4 months on my health. I hope this isn't the case but I'll be relieved when I hear the results of the tests afterwards and what I need to be concentrating on.
Thanks everyone for your welcomes, I have to go to bed now as I'm feeling quite drained. See you all tomorrow :wavey::sleep:
