I joined this site to get info for my brother, he has had type 1 juvenile britttle diabetes since the age of 13 he is now 52. He is currently undergoing kidney dialyis and is on a transplant list. my question for today is, does anyone know of any treatment for nueropathy of the eye's? He is in great pain and on pain meds that only make him sick. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you a concerned sister

:star: Welcome to the site, Kathy. I hope your brother appreciates having such a thoughtful sister. That probably helps him more than anything else. I am sorry that he is going through such misery. I know absolutely nothing about neuropathy of the eye. I am glad I don't have the experience, but sorry I am no help.
I'm sure there will be someone with more info than me.

I didn't even know it was possible to get neuropathy in the eyes. Another thing to worry about. :frown:
Thanks for posting the question. I guess it's time for me to learn something new, so I'll be peeking over your shoulder at any replies you get.
cheers,

Hey Kathy...
Wow, sounds like your brother is going through a rough time... :frown:. I know that can't be easy on anyone, but he's lucky to have his family supporting him. I wish I could offer you help in some way, but I also do not know anyting about eye Neuropathy. To be honest, I haven't heard of it either, but I guess it's some sort of nerve damage in the eye. I know Retinopathy of the eyes is the one most common complications Diabetics run into...I wonder if this is related to that.
Sorry, I know I'm not much help to you, but I want to let you know that we are here for support regardless. I wish you and your brother the best and hopefully, things will start looking up soon
Take care :ciao:

I had not heard about this either till now when you posted on here. I am truly sorry about having to go through this. I did find the following:
Eye neuropathy is a rare neuropathy (nerve damage) that affects the nerves of the eyes or eye-related nerves in the face. Although it is most commonly associated with feet neuropathy, neuropathy is a generic term for nerve damage, and diabetic neuropathy can strike any body nerves.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be used with caution in people with renal disease. Antidepressant medications such as amitriptyline (sometimes used with fluphenazine) or nerve medications such as carbamazepine or phenytoin sodium may be helpful. Codeine is sometimes prescribed for short-term use to relieve severe pain. In addition, a topical cream, capsaicin, is now available to help relieve the pain of neuropathy.

I know that having the blood sugars under control is the most important thing to get neuropathy to slow down or stop! Others have used Alpha-Lipoic Acid with a lot of success.. You need to take 200 mg twice a day, you can get at walmart the cheapest. Dr's in Europe have been using it for years, here in the U.S. it is only used as a supplement.
