I am a pumper and my last 2 Hb1ac's were higher than usual.
Anyway, this past week I decided to do everything right, famous last words i know. Well today I just HAD to have some cereal.. I can't eat cereal so don't know what i was thinking. The milk in it makes me spike, and people the thing is I KNOW this and still did it anyway :( I've been fighting high bsugars for hours now. But I think I have another problem as well.. could it be that my basal and bolus are maybe not set right since I've gained some weight? :dontknow: My last few Hb1ac's were around 8 but before, they were around 7. This evening I was thinking---what's the use? And believe me, I don't hardly EVER get down but lately feel as though I am beating my head against the wall. Thanks for letting me whine friends, now I'll sit back and watch for your replies

Its normal to feel like that from time to time. Just when you got everything nice & smooth, you get surprises. The good thing is you can get back on track fast. I think your settings might be a bit off. Is it possible you might be coming down with something?
Have you tried having your cereal with your ratio settings adjusted?

Linn...

Sounds like you, me, and Jen are three musketeers when it comes to this issue. We're struggling! God, why does this have to be so difficult- it's such a pain in the butt .

It could very well be that your bolus and basal rates are off. Have you tested your basals recently? Also weight gain can contribute to the high sugar reading you are seeing. The higher your weight climbs, the less sensitive you are to insulin...which means that you most likely will need more that you would at a lower weight. One other thing...have you contacted your doctor at all? It might be worth giving him a call :call:... and seeing what he recommends.

I know how tough it is, believe me, but we've got to keep fighting :boxing:

Hang in there!:flybye:

Sometimes I have days when it seems like no matter how good I am, my BS is all out of whack!:eating: Then I will have spells when I know I am eating all the wrong things, and my BS stays good. When I think on it though I can usually find the reason for it either way. I am fighting a bug or very stressed out. Sometimes when I think I am being careful, I realize I miscounted carbs, or forgot about that "chocolate bar" I had. Sometimes there just is no reason at all! I have trouble with milk, too. But, I figure it is one thing my body kind of needs, so I risk the rise sometimes, or I have my cereal in yogurt, that seems to cause me less problems. Also, some cereals are really high in carbs, I try to make sure I eat low carb cereal, or one with high fiber. We are all different, so this might not help you at all, but yopu know you are not alone with this problem.

I might have a run of a few days when everything goes perfectly, then one reading will be way off and it takes days to get it stable again.

Linn,

You appear to be considering a ceral specific carb ratio. That is what I do for certain foods that if I look it them (let only eat any) sends me sugar into orbit.

Wishing you well and keep up the effort, I stopped worrying about my BGs. Just take it one day at a time.

Hey Linn,

Welcome to the Human Race :) We all do things we know we shouldn't - it is part of being alive.

Don't tell anyone, but right after I was diagnosed, I decided I "wasn't" diabetic and ate all sorts of stuff.

After I arrived at the hospital, it hit me I shouldn't have done that. lol

Don't shoot for perfection - you will make yourself nuts.

I am sitting here in the office after lunch and my BG is 140. Would I like it to be 110? -- yup, but it isn't, so all I can do is my best.

Here is my motto:

"Injecting units of Insulin is good. Injecting units of worry is not."

Don't stress. Do your best, relax, laugh a little and give yourself a break.

I rarely avoid eating things due to my Diabetes...

When I was young I regularly got 7's without any testing and without watching what I was eating... Things were great... I miss thoes days...

My numbers have been up so my doctor sent me to an endo a few months ago, who changed me to Novolog & Lantus from N & R (saying thoes were way outdated)... I still don't fully watch wat I eat but I do keep better control of my sugars...

Hang in there Linn... Get back on that horse and keep trying. Never give up. There's only one you. With determination and hard work and a change in lifestyle it is possible to get diabetes under control. It is not easy. It can be depressing at times. We are all here to give support and to get it when we need it. Just remember, you are not alone in this and that you are your own best doctor. Test often, see what works and avoid what doesn't. Learn from your mistakes and practice your successes. Don't let the bad days get you down, there's always tomorrow... :)

Hey there Linn, I think just the fact that you posted here about how you were doing and what you were feeling is a sign that you are doing great!! Don't be so hard on yourself, just not worth it....

Just keep this in mind: You have diabetes, diabetes does not have you!

You control it or it will control you.

I went from T1 to T2....... no insulin. You can too

Not to change the subject, but please share your experience. I didn't think it was possible to go from T1 to T2...

Yeah, that's quite a feat! Unless it was just a missed diagnosis because of age (i.e., if your under age X, it must be Type 1).

We've all gone through this, Linn. Some days my BS runs within target range, and the next day, it's way off.

Have you tried Special K Protein Plus cereal and Hood's Carb Countdown Milk? They are both delicious and do NOT taste low carb at all. The cereal has 3g fat, 14g carbs with 5g of fiber per 3/4 cup serving. The milk only has 3g of carbs per 8oz glass. I usually buy the cereal at Walmart because it's much cheaper than my local grocery store.

:itsme: Thanks so much for your replies since my original post. I have really made some changes. 2 in particular
1. Cut out sweets altogether.
2. Changed my basal on my pump.

Now on my meter my average for 1 week says 118 and 2 week average says 135 :)
And I am feeling so much better as well. Cannot believe how tired i was because of the constant flucuation of the high and low bsugars.

I really had to do this on my own folks, and i don't mind, it's just that my doc doesn't seem to be much help and i think he's clueless about diabetes lol.
Anyone else's doc seem like this?

He really interested in my HB1ac's though :deal:

Anyways, just had to get up and get with it and you guys are truly a God send in helping me cope and being there for me :)

 I am happy to know you are doing better! I was reading this thread and could identify with many of the posts. I know when my numbers are high I feel bad and tend to be depressed and weepy. When the numbers are in range these emotional feelings pass and I have a more positive outlook. I have similar BG reactions with Milk, Cereal, Bread, or Pizza. Soy milk has less of a respose in my system. "Vanilla 8th continent light" soy milk has 5 carbs per 8oz.. Blue Bunny Carb Freedon Yogurt has only 5 Carbs. Oatmeal with extra fiber like "Quaker instant Weight Control" has 6 Gms fiber 1 gm sugar and 29 carbs. Portion control is another problem I have had with cereal. (My cereal bowl held 2 servings)Ooops.
Everyday is a learning experience with this. Go easy on yourself. You are not a number! Sounds like you have managed very well!:congrats:
