We don't eat out too often. Fast food, I find that Wendy's 99 cent menu works best for me. I usually have a deluxe cheeseburger and a small chilli. We go to Applebees and three of us will share 3 or 4 appetizers... quesadilla's, wings, veggie pizza, something made with spinach, can't think of the name. I fill up quick, so don't eat much when I go out. As long as I use my pen before we eat, my BS does pretty good on this. Special meals out, I have been known to eat a small steak, baked potato and salad, but skip the bread, without too much rise.

Whenever I eat out, I simply make smart choices. I try not too order much carbs, except for some salad to accompany protein. pumping does help out a lot.

I'm the same way, when I eat out I try to eat low carb. Either that or something that has a carb and/or protein count that I am intimately familiar with.

Wherever, whatever, whenever. I don't make any dietary choices based on diabetes.

Where the food is good and the drinks are adult. That leaves all of the fast food places out!

I don't eat at buffets, but eat at other restaurants quite often. If I order something with bread, I just don't eat the bread. I avoid pasta, rice, bread and any type of potato product. Otherwise, I eat what I want within moderation.

If I feel like dessert, I'll order it but have one or two bites at the most. At one particular restaurant they have an awesome key lime cheesecake and 2 bites is all I'll do and it's the perfect ending to a meal, and I don't feel deprived.

My wife just mad Pirogies with Potatoes and Cheddar cheese and I ate them and had a piece of chocolate cake. Oh how I'm going to pay for this tomorrow. The good news is I have lost 3 pounds.

Oh the Pirogies were fried in pure coconut oil.

If I ever eat out it is usally at McDonalds. But I do not eat out a lot. We try to avoid going to Buffets because we dont know the carbs but if we do we just guess and if my sugar is high later I correct it. Is this a good habit???

Desertcoyote93 - this question is for you. when you said " if my sugar is high later I correct it." What do you mean when you said you "correct" it? I find myself in the same situation because I don't know how to control myself at times - so my blood sugar goes high and I don't feel too good afterwards. I seriously don't know. I only take 1 pill a day and it's 4 mg of Avandaryl.

We go out a lot...not to fast food, but sit down restaurants. We really like Shari's. I can have their prime rib dip with a salad and have no spike at all. Though with my current carb ratio, that's like 50 units of Humalog... :(

I'm lucky that I can eat Chinese and Pizza without big spikes either. However, I do have to really count the carbs well.

To the previous poster, you aren't able to correct since you're not on insulin. We correct by taking a certain number of units of short acting insulin in order to correct our numbers.

When we eat out there are about five places we go. Usually the kids are involved in the choosing.
McDonalds (of course)
Applebees
One steak house or another
Taco Bell (pronounce Taco Smell) (eeeewwwww)
Arby's
and
Olive Garden. ( the soup and salad lunch is good with the bgs)

Then if we order in it is pizza. two whole slices of a papa johns thin crust works.:eating:

We tried Mexican but I was afraid to test. But as luck would have it the kids did not like it so we did not go back.(I do not count Taco smell as mexican)
SO far numbers have been good for all even fast food. It is amazing what happens when you remove half the bread.

We eat out about once a week. We go to places like Ryan's, Fire Mountain (owned by Ryan's - same style place) Golden Corral, a local Mexican place, Johnny's New York Style Pizza, and a local hole in the wall wings place. Ocassionally Chilie's, Applebee's, Longhorns, Texas Roadhouse.

The buffet places, I usually fill up on salad. Then have a steak and some veggies (usually broccoli, califlower or carrots) Since I know these are lower in carbs.

Mexican, that varies, but usually chimichangas, fajitas or carnitas.

Johnny's I normally get the grilled chicken caeser salad, sometimes a calzone (BAD CHOICE!! LOL) and sometimes a slice of pizza.

Hole in the wall wings place ... varies! They're stuff is pretty high carb. So I'm really careful there.

And for the rest ... Usually a Rib Eye and veggies. Don't much care for them tho, as they are WAY over priced, and their food seems to be much more carby! :(

I know Chilie's has some "healthy" menu ... ummm over 100 carbs for a meal isn't healthy for ANYONE I dont' think! ONLY supper item they had UNDER 60g of carbs was some fish thing, and I don't like fish! UGH

At first, after I was diagnosed, I was scared to go out, not knowing what had what, but I learned real quick about eat something, and test after to see how what affects you! ;)

It is much harder tho, when you don't know how stuff is prepared. SO much easier to just make your own food. But I enjoy going out with our friends, so, I learned how to deal with it! ;)

When we eat out I try to avoid fast food at all costs. We eat out about 2 times a month ... normaly something like Applebees or Olive Guardin ... last night we had some at OG and I had lots of salad and the mediteranian shrimp ... my feoncee ate my pasta later at night cause I barely touched it.

Normaly I cook at home :)

I rarely eat fast food, never eat at buffets and dont eat beaf, pork, lamb or fish so that pretty much leaves me with vegetarian and chicken dishes where ever we eat unless we go someplace that sells game. I dont base my diet on diabetes, never have. On insulin I bolused according to carb intake and corrected later if I accidentally miscalculated. Now I still eat what I want and if my bs is higher then I'd like at 2hrs post prandial, I know it will be back down in an hour or so. Yay for islets! lol

My favorite restaurant is mediterranian. mmmmmm

well my favorite places are

taco bell - i normally eat 3 chicken soft taco supremes or 2 chicken gordita's

arby's - roast beef with chedder sauce, ill order the fries or curly fries, but i dont eat them all

wendy's - grilled chicken, with either a salad or a baked potatoe ( i never eat a hole baked potatoe, even before the diabetes)

mcd's - mcrib, and a small fry or fruit and walnut snack

sonic - grilled chicken wrap with a small tator tot

pizza hut - a BIG salad first! then a cavatini bake (only eat half and bring the other half home for dinner, and 2 pieces of bread split up to one with meal, and one later with dinner)

papa johns - thin crust large pizza 2 to 3 pieces usually (ill order 2 pizza's, one thin, one regular for hubby, and ill eat on that pizza for at least 3 meals)

all these things ive eaten and tested, and do pretty good with it, i havnt gone high once eating this way and i dont use insulin

I'll eat anywhere, but I try to go light. Exceptions are rare but do occur:

Saturday morning I had the buffet breakfast at our hotel: a scoup of scrambled eggs, two sausages, 12 slices of bacon, two pieces of french toast with butter and syrup, some sliced melon, orange juice, and a whole pot of coffee! My BG was 15.8 before hand. I took 12 correction units and a 25 unit bolus!!! Two hours later I was 6.8. I was 4.5 at lunch, and 4.0 mid afternoon!!! I had to under bolus at lunch and eat extra later. :top:

Like many others I don't eat out much, but when I do I *try* to make smart choices.

Many of the salads seem to work for me and I try to stay away from TOO MUCH of any one thing. I find that oily foods with carbs works a bit better as it slows processing of carbs in the stomach, but I end up needing to adjust my NPH/Levemir.

At all times I try my hardest to find something that is a whole grain, complex-carb and as unprocessed as possible. Then I make sure to mix it with veggies and protein. Though this is more so at some of the more flexible, niche sit-down restaurants.

Since my whole family is too lazy to cook we usually go out to eat for dinner....our favorite places are:
-T.G.I.Fridays
-Joshua Huddy
-and Red Lobster to name a few

before i was on metformin i had to take sooo much insulin before and after a meal and my bgs wouls still be high...

last night we went to Fridays and i got grilled chicken and ate some mashed potatoes with it...gave myself only 3 units of inulin cause i was 98 before and 2 hours after dinner i dropped to 70 ate some ice cream and gave myself another 3 units ::which seemed little to me:: then before bed i dropped again to 45!!!! wow thats crazy....

We hit that a few weeks ago, I was pretty pleased that I was on-target at my +2hr reading. Plenty of good veggies, some lean steak, that's all cool. I thought the rolls and that chocolate-pecan pie would send me high, but did OK.

Nice confidence builder.

I find that a lot of the time if I don't binge on the carbs with potatoes or something similar, after a good meal 70-80g is usually a fairly accurate estimate for a bolus. Sometimes I need a 2u touchup or a walk later, but generally that ends up being close.
