View Full Version : Average lows per week?

By "low" I mean anything below 80 (for reference.)
I normally have 1-2 per week, but rarely a really bad hypo. Actually haven't had one of those in a loooooong time - like a couple years.
So I normally hit the 60-70 range 1-2 times per week.
Is everyone else in that general category?

About a month or so ago I was having 6 or 8 a week. However now that I trust my pump it seems I only get about 2 a month.

I only consider myself low below 4 mmol/l (72 mg/dl) which happens once or twice a week, usually before breakfast when it just seems to make me hungry. I'm into th 70 - 80 range 3 or 4 times a week but that's probably because I don't consider that low or I'd aim my fasting levels a bit higher.

I agree Simon - I dont really consider 70-80 to be low either. I use the 80-120 standard just for reference for my post.
However I will say that if I am at 71 I will eat something. But the 70-80 range doesn't make me shake etc.
I don't normally shake until I get into the 50's.

Eri's been fluctuating a lot....below 70's, since she's been sick, quite a few times a week....up to 10 or so(more or less)...
Believe it or not, when first dx'd, her "magic" number was 67 for a seizure. Even her endo at the time couldn't believe it...of course, then it started going lower and lower, but I think 67 b/c she was so HI for so long b/f that.

It varies, but I'd say at least once a day... I tend to drop right after exercise :bike:

It varies for me also, but I'd say on average 4-5/week that go below 70.

I'm usually "low" every morning in that case.
I'm between 60-80. I think i maybe need to drop my basal rate during the day now since i excerise mon-fri.
I feel fine around 60. Its the 50's that give me a headache and make me wake up in a cold sweat. Pop a few gluco-tabs in beside my bed and go back to sleep.

Yes! That is me too! I am so tired of crashing at night (35-45) and having "monster" killer headaches in the morning (headaches that don't respond to aspirin).
My pump is in my purse until after training, so I can at least take it out and play with it every spare minute and get used to how the menus and options work. I can hardly wait for the 22nd - my pump start date.
cheers,

I very rarely go below 75/4.1.
BUt I rarely get above 130/7.2 either.
Except when I allow myself to have coffee in the morning:embarasse

:topic: Take the thing out of your purse and wear it. What a great way to get use to it some. Figure out how you are going to sleep with it. Are you going to put it in the leather case and hook it to your whatever you wear ? Are you going to stuff it in a pocket ? Start wearing it around the house. My pump trainer had me wearing it (minus the insert) for about 2 weeks prior to going live. Sure helped me out.

I go low usually once a day. Most often when waking up, but all I need is just a tiny, I mean minute, glass of juice and it will bump me up to 100-120 from being 45-60.

Well, my low range is set as under 75, but using that number it's way too many, like 10-15. If i used 80 it would be even more.

I usually go below 80 about once a day (morning, still fine tuning my Symlin dose), but rarely below 70.. maybe once every 10 days or so. Lowest I have ever been is 54 (course I am still a diabetic baby, less than 2 years). My "target" is 90, so I don't usually eat something until I go below 80 anyway, or if I am below 120 and about to exercise.

I'm not getting lows then. I qualify a low as below 70, and if I get a reading below 80, I eat something to bring it between 80 and 100, either half a glucose tab or maybe a single cracker.
I think you're referring to nighttime lows, and I have gotten them when I've changed my dosage rate. It was really bad probably my first 2-3 months with type 1, but I eventually got the basal dosage right.
I have nighttime highs sometimes. That's usually if I used humalog that day instead of regular insulin and the afterkick wakes me up. I tend to wake up at 120-130. I also wake up at 70.
The other thing I've noticed about myself is that I use Ultralente, and it has a U-curve. so if I go to bed at 98, midway through the night it might go down to 85, but I'll wake up at 112. I always check my sugar before going to bed and take an R-insulin adjustment, and I have a cutoff point for eating.
my last Hb1ac with this approach was 6.2, but I think my next one will be higher because I've had more morning highs of 115-122, as mentioned in another post. I weigh more, which I think is the reason--your weight affects the effect of the basal dosage, so I'm working to find a new set point.

Only one or two times a week. It's usually the middle of the night or on Sundays after church before I can get lunch. If I sneak a snake in the middle (we have three hours at church --in 3 sessions) I'm okay though.

I'll point out that I had a very physical job moving boxes around, and I found that it was so physical that I could eat a low carb lunch (<15g) without insulin and I needed to take a glucose tab each 2 hour break. I couldn't take insulin with it or it would be too potent at that activity level. Even still, sometimes I'd leave for home at 69. mg/dL because the labor I was doing used up all the sugar.

In that case Mdude, you probably want to reduce your basal dose.
As for me and hypos - well, because my nurse didn't listen to me last time I went, I'm now frankly screwed when it comes to control until I see her next week (and I'm going to make sure there's **** to pay when I do). Right now I'm having about 6-7 hypos a day, and I'm also having the reprecussions from that too - ie. my BGs are either at 2.5 or 13.5, and never anywhere else in between.
I haven't felt this sh**y for 7 years.
The only day I've actually had good BG results was when I'd got ridiculously drunk the night before - I managed to incapacitate my liver for the entire following day. Unfortunately even I'm not prepared to drink that much every night.

"Low" for me would be a BS of under 70. Before going on the pump back in December, I probably had 2-3 lows a day. Since starting the pump 7 weeks ago, I've probably had less than a half dozen lows. Big improvement for me!

I drop into the 40s, 50s.. probably 1-3 times a week.
I used to drop that low every night, but I believe it got corrected.

OK, OK
I was traveling and afraid it would fall out of my pocket and get lost, since I'm not "hooking up" with saline until the 16th. I'm home now, and will wear it (unattached) until then - probably in my pocket most days. Based on earlier comments, I don't expect any problems sleeping with it. I will set it by my pillow, and just let it go where it wants (within 42").
The actual site changes should be OK with the handy-dandy auto-inserting Insets. I've already taken one Inset out and played with it. I put a piece of wax paper over a firm cushion, and walked through the whole thing. This also gave me an infusion set with wax paper covering the adhesive that I could show people who wanted to know how this was going to work, what the cannula looked like, and how easy it is to disconnect for showers, etc.
The only part that's still a big unknown is how to fill the reservoir. Hopefully, that won't be a big deal either.
Thanks to everyone here, I feel comfortable about living with a pump, and eager to get started. Two weeks and counting,

Nope, most people are fine self treating at those levels. I sometimes don't even treat a 3.5 (63) if I feel okay and know I will be eating soon.

what level should my bs be at to rush to the hospital?
Funnygrl
02-09-2006, 06:23 PM
It depends on when you can't deal with it by yourself. I had an EMT help me once (for a bs of 18 US- 1.0 your scale), but have never gone to the hospital. I have used glucagon at home a few times though. As long as you can get it up, I see no reason to go to the hospital. You should call your doctor after a severe low though.

Awful to say but I usually end up at the hospital when I have passed out from a low. I come to either in the ambulance or on the way out and don't seem to get a choice.
The times I have said no, my hubby said yes, lol. I guess it all depends on you and if you feel you need to go. I would definitely call your doctor to see if they want you to do a follow up at their office.

It really doesn't matter.. there is no reason to rush to the hospital unless you are unconcious or nearly unconcious, in which case you should have someone give you a glucagon injection. The glucagon injection does give you high BGs for a couple days after it is taken. This is why if you take the glucagon, you should go to the hospital. Otherwise, if you are able to treat a low normally.. disregard exactly how low it is, and just proceed with normal treatment. Meters are known to be inaccurate when your BG is under 60 mg/dL.

k thanks guys...i didnt think so, theres no point in freaking out and running to the hospital with bs at like 2.5 this can be controlled simply..i just needed to reassure myself
