View Full Version : Highest BG you've ever had?

Aftiel

When I was diagnosed at age 16 (44 now,) my BG was in the 800's.

In almost 30 years with Type 1, I have hit 500 a couple of times, due to being crazy sick at the time.

What is your all time highest BG?

When Eri was dx'd, she was over a thousand...

Her highest, other than that, is usually HI...but until that point, 599.

My highest also was at dx...I believe it read HI on my primary care DR's meter...(which I believe is over 600 ). I basically felt like **** at that time in my life. Not fun :thumpdown

I was diagnosed at only 230 or 240 or something, but then one Easter I went nuts with the M&Ms and ended up 560, which I think must be my highest.

1200 at DX. I have no idea what I may have been in those long ago pre-meter days, but have hit the 500 mark a few times on my meter.

I hit my highest in 2003 when I had cellulitis in my knee from a fall, I got to 454. But was on Lantus and 2000 mg metformin, 10 mg glipizide and 5mg avandia at the time. No telling what it would have been if I had not been taking diabetes drugs, was on bedrest for a month and in hospital 4 days on iv antibiotics. Infections can play havoc with your blood sugars.

Have had it in the 300's since then a few times since but mostly food related.

When I was in the dr's office being diagnosed, my non-fasting level was 575. My fasting glucose tested at 313 and my hbA1c was 15.7.

Before I got on rapid acting insulin (within a week of the diabetes diagnosis, my endo diagnosed type 1.5), my BG level went up to over 600. Not sure exactly how high because that's where my meter stops.

So I called the endo, she told me to inject 30 units of Lantus. Which I did--then (not knowing any better) I trotted off to yoga class.

Since being on Lantus/Novolog, I sometimes spike over 200--the most recent worst was 321. I think the waitress at the restaurant brought me regular not DIET coke. Ugh.

I have no clue what I was when I was diagnosed at 2 years old, but it had to be awfully high to put me in a coma for 2 days, i'll have to ask my parents if they remember. Other then that I have gotten the 'HI' about 5-7 times in 25 years of bg testing. The first meter I got said "Hi" after 350. It was the one where you had to wipe the blood off the strip after a minute, stick it in the machine and wait another minute lol. Those were the same strips you used to just use without a meter and compare it against the colors on the side of the strip container to guesstimate what you were.

I'd forgotten about those wonderful experiences. If you were too low you'd hope to have someone looking for you, because it was hard to compare. Oh, sweet memories!!
Actually I've been amazed as I read the highs you people have had. I've had an easy life. Once or twice I've been around 450. Then one in the 300's. Too many in the 200s. LIFE IS GOOD!!

Hmm.. but you are type 2.. doesn't that give you any advantage?

Maybe it does. My highs have been pretty low compared to what some of you have had to go through. Because I am insulin dependent I still have to fight the highs and lows though.

I'm not sure what I was diagnosed at since I was 11 months old then. As for my highest I can remember, it was in the 1100s in the 8th grade when I got bronchitis and DKA. Other than that, I maybe run once in the 500s every 2-3 months.

Yes....

The US uses mg/dl and EVERYONE ELSE uses mmol. The conversion is simple, just multiply your reading by 18 and you have the US reading, or divide our readings by 18 and you have yours.

WOW............I can't even imagine my BS being over 500. You guys must have felt like ****.

I was dx'd with a fasting BS of 393, but thinking back to it now, I probably was higher prior to having blood work. I had gone to Disney World two weeks before and had a late night hot fudge sundae (extra hot fudge) from Ghiraldelli's in the Walt Disney World Village. I don't even want to think about how high I was two hours later..........LOL

At DX around 600, the highest since around 410 or so, but very rarely over 300. Lowest was about 32 I guess.

When I was 18 months i ended up in the hospital not knowing what was going on. They tested my sugar and it was way in the 1000 and went into a coma, not sure how long. So thats how I was dx'd.:banghead: and 25 years later here I am.

Highest: Diagnosed at 1258 - Coma for 3 days. Hospital for 2 weeks.

Lowest: Few years ago I lost motor skills and fell down 2 flights of stairs trying to crawl down them to call 911. I had to get 28 stitches from the fall however no broken bones (Yay). I was immobile on the floor for what the doctors think was about 5 hours. I don't remember much but apparently my neighbor heard me crying or yelling and knocked down the door. when I got to the er my sugar was 23. the dr said that hormones were in my system and that the hormones brought up my reading. The doctor thought I was probably around 5-10 when I fell.

That has to be the single worst low I have ever heard about, short of the fictional Steel Magnolia's story. Sorry you had to go through that :(

It's cool, I have had some bad ones but I have had more good than bad so I'm okay with that. I figure it just comes with the territory. But when I'm bad....I'M BAD.

Highest ever was "HI" at docs office.

Since then, I think I've seen 400s a couple times, and 300s happen at least once a month.

Can't wait to pump ...

My highest reading ever was a 720. I had a kidney infection.

My lowest was an 18. I went into a coma for a couple hours, and woke up in the hospital with a priest giving me my "last rites". Mom was crying. Bad memory.

My highest was 22 mmol/L (396 mg/dl for you guys) and I felt sooo sick!! :puke: I just can't imagine how it must be with a BG of 1000 mg/dl. I just can't.

Went this high because of steroids I was taking to get rid of a severe allergic reaction. I don't plan to ever go this high ever again. No thanks.

Over 500. I don't remember the exact number. That wasn't at diagnosis...that was when I was ignoring my diabetes and hoping it would go away...and also forgetting to bolus at dinner without controlling my food consumption. Bad girl!!!

Next time I go back to my GP in Canada I want to find out 1) my blood glucose and A1C on diagnosis, 2) my date of diagnosis so I can have an annual "living well with diabetes" party.

Since diagnosis, my blood glucose has hit the 30s twice after eating at Subway  !! I did not feel good at all, so can't imagine how horrible it would be to have readings like some of you have had. I guess I should consider myself lucky.
