What time should I take Lantus?

Hi guys

As you'll see from my other post, I'm now on Lantus.

Was just wondering if theres a specific time i should take it (I forgot to ask). I assume at night, but is it alright to take at anytime due to it having no peak? For instance, could I take it at 8pm? And should I take it at the same time every night or does that not matter?

Sorry if this sounds a stupid thing to ask!

You should take lantus same time every night, when I was on it I took it at 10pm every night but I don't think it matters what time you take it, but take it at the same time every night

The only thing I was told was to take my Lantus right before I went to bed at night.

Although I was originally told night-time, you can take it anytime it's convenient for you as long as it's 'approximately' the same time. I remember I experimented with my timing quite a bit after I recognized my individual Lantus action profile (I do get a bit of a peak over the first 12 hrs and it starts running out at ~20 hrs).

Thanks. My bed time ranges quite abit, from 10pm til 4am depending on whether im working or not so I think I'll stick to 9/10pm and see ho0w that goes.

I split my dose (it doesn't last the full 24 hrs for me) and do it 8pm and 8am. I leave myself a little play taking it anywhere from one hour before then to one hour after. It works for me but I'm t2 so it might be different for you.

I just stopped Lantus but I was on a split dose of 15u AM & 10u PM. It doesn't matter when you take it as long as you take it near the same time - no more than a 1 Hour Window. Also you should discuss with your Endo your sensitivity to Lantus. For me, Lantus only lasted 18 Hours - Hence why I had to take split dose's.

If you take it in the morning and it runs out in the night it can be very hard to work out what your dose needs to be from your fasting bg. That's why I take it before bed; I'm not into doing more than I have to in the morning.:boring:

It is important to take Lantus about the same time every day (plus or minus 30 minutes). It doesn't last 24 hours for me either, so I split my Lantus, 14 units @ 9:30 AM and 6 units @ 9:30 PM. If I take any more at night, I have horrible lows, but I need more during the day. I see it peak around the 9-10 hour mark, and disappear just past 18 hours.

I work 2 weeks of 630a-630p, then do 2 weeks of 630p-630a. So, my bedtime is around 10pm half the month and around 8am the other half.

Do I still take my shot at the same time no matter what? Or is it ok to switch the time every 2 weeks???

I am glad to read these replies in this thread because I noticed that my lantas was wearing off late in the evening, less than 24 hrs and I am on a large dose of 90 per night. I will be splitting mine up to 6am and 6pm 45units per dose and see how that works... I think it makes alot more sense than a huge dose all at once.

I especially appreciated the comments on how long you felt that your lantas was actually working vs it's design time of 24 hours...

If it were me, I would call your doc/CDE/endo (whichever you see) and ask for their input. Sorry that I can't be of much more help but I'm a little hesitant to say. I am not a doctor so therefore, I feel that I am not qualified. Besides, that's what you pay them to do. Right??

You seem to be a perfect case for breaking your dose into two shots, one in the am and the other in the pm. There are many indications that it work better that way.

I used to take my lantus at bedtime. Found my sugars going low when I started taking lantus, so I'd take a snack when I'd take my lantus (feeding the insulin). After a couple years it got much worse. I'd wake up in horrible sweats. I was having hypoclycemia in my sleep due to the lantus. My endo changed the lantus dosage from bedtime to morning and the problem has gone away. Moving to the pump in 3 days so I'm getting ready to say bye bye to lantus personally... Good luck

According to Dr. Bernstein (a guy worh reading, even if you don't agree with everthing he has to say), Aventis sort of faked the tests to get a 24 hour result. They gave larger than required doses of Lantus which had the effect of stretching out it's release into the blood stream.
I found that I could reduce my dose by about 15% by splitting it into 2 shots.
Has anyone else seen that?
