I started taking lantus last night, 44 units.

When I went to bed at 1am my bs was 7.4, now at 10am its 14.9. :hmmmm: I feel terriible- should I take some extra Humalog to get me down or would that affect my main Humalog shot?

Should I increase the lantus dose tonight or leave it for a few more days?

Thanks x

I'd call my doctor to get the official answer, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV :call2:

I can tell you what I think though. Before doing anything, you need to know how much of a correction to take. Taking "some extra" isn't close enough. You and your doctor should set up a sliding scale to use Humalog when you have a high BGL. Trying to do it on your own without knowing how could get you into trouble.

"or would that affect my main Humalog shot?" If computed correctly, a correction should just bring your BG down from a high. Be sure to eat for your main Humalog shot though.

"Should I increase the lantus dose tonight or leave it for a few more days?"
I edited because I just realized that you just started using Lantus. I'd wait and see if this repeats and see how well the Lantus was working the rest of the day before making changes unless your doctor says otherwise. It usually takes a couple days for BGLs to stabilize when starting a new insulin, especially a long acting one.

When I first stared Lantus my Dr told me to only adjust the dose every 3 days or so.
It may not be the Lantus that's causing the high reading.
There could be other things affecting your levels. For example what you ate before you went to bed.
You certainly need to wait & see how the rest of the day goes. If you have too much Lantus you'll be hypo all day & night!

You could have a top up if your meals still a way off, but go carefully. Not more than 2 units. If I've got a meal due soon I usually wait have an extra unit or 2 then or you can get an overlap, keeping in mind the humalog probably lasts around 3 hours

14.9 isn't too bad considering you're trying something new.

Thanks guys.

I took 6 units, then had breakfast with 1 unit to 10carb ratio- didnt think it would be enough but I'm now at 5 so guess I was wrong!

Come to think of it, I have a cold and am quite stressed and tired, so the high readings could be from that.

Help is appreciated, I havnt changed insulin for a looooooong time so this is new ground for me :)
