...when you test and your bloodsugar is normal, it gives you the right to eat or have a snack?

If its normal you dont HAVE to eat. If your hungry then go ahead following whatever regimen you are using to cover your snack/meals. The only time you HAVE to eat is if you are running low.

Nope...if it is normal then I ;just use my bolus wizard on my pump to see how much active I have left......if it is none I think to myself....BOY I covered that good...real good. If is says I have like 2.0 units left...I go into temp basal mode and it stays the same for hours.....just tricks that I have learned along the way.....

Ok here's a question along the line of snacks..how often do you give/allow yourself something that you shouldn't? ie: paice of cake, chocolate, etc? I'm just wondering what you all do? This is a stuggle for me. Thanks

When ever I want it actually. I try to balance my food and if I did extremely well eating that day I won't deny myself....if I went on a rare junk food day then yes I won't add fuel to the already bright fire..so to speak. I try to allow myself a sweet treat after dinner(usually it is 100 cal pack of cookies/fudge stripes are my new obsession or a pudding or something)...

Karen: appsolutely!!! Maybe not so much now, but definately when i was at school. My mind also tricked me into thinking that if I ate cake or choccy, as long as I had some insulin I wouldnt put on any weight!! Hee hee

I'm always hungry, so when I test and my BS is within range, I'll have a snack to hold me over until my next meal.

Just to be sure, you mean a snack with covering insulin? A "naked" snack is something else altogether!

I guess I am old school, but I don't ever eat sweets unless I need them to correct a low.
That was drilled into my head from the time I was diagnosed, so am just used to it being that way now.
As far as when I eat - yes, I will eat whenever if my blood sugar is in the right range.

Like KGM I am always hungry and if I do a two hour test after a meal and I am still hungry or just hungry in general :T since I already know my bgs I will eat and yes cover with insulin/bolus, unless it is a test that I feel that is dropping.
I guess just revealing my love of food and thinking well I tested I am normal and already know my bgs, I will have a snack since all I have to do is bolus for the carbs.
Ahhhh the games we play.

As a t2 on only lantus I guess it would be a "naked" snack. I don't have the luxury of just covering what I eat. This is something that I want to address with my doc...she doesn't want me to use any rapid insulin. I'm stuck with either not having anything tempting or I just have to accept the killer headache that goes with the high sugar. I'm not a very confrontational person but I hope to get the nerve up soon.

I try not to allow myself a snack because it's too hard to bring my sugars back down. My doctor believes I should cover a high that I already have, but not cover carbs I plan on eating. But my problem is once in awhile I just feel I need to be "naughty". Then I have to feel guilty and work forever to bring it down. Someday I will get the nerve up to actually call that endo in Yakima to see if I can get in.

Sometimes I feel bad for Type 2's as you don't have the luxury of bolusing to cover for your carbs. I have been a Type 1 for 38 years and pumping for 3 years and the pump has brought so much freedom, still a lot of work, diabetes still sucks, but it just has made my life easier.
I am not saying one type is easier over another, but I feel Type 2's are a bit more restricted. For the first 34 years of my diabetes I knew nothing about carb counting or carb/insulin ratio, and just was on two shots a day and survived with no rhyme or reason and like some of you Type 2's suffered the consequences of eating the wrong things, more volume of food errors, since I did not know about carb counting. I too would have to exercise a high down and feel like **** for long periods of time until bloodsuger was back to normal so I can understand a bit of how you feel. I did not understand at that time that I could take more fast acting insulin to bring my bgs down.
In the last four years and understanding carbs and insulin to cover those carbs with changing to Lantus and Humalog and finally pumping, there is such a freedom but still the guilt of snacking when I shouldn't when my bgs is normal.
Liz please learn other options for Type 2's, some are even on pumps now, and bring this into your next appointment and if doctor does not listen, find another doctor.
I think the goal of all Type 1's and 2's is to have as close to normal bgs at all times and bring those numbers to normal fast if they are high and not have to suffer through waiting for bgs to go back to normal because you are not receiving the most optimal treatment.

Actually when my blood sugar is normal I'm least likely to eat.
If it's low I HAVE to eat.
If it's high i figure I'm taking a shot anyway, what's a few extra units to cover a snack?
And to answer the other question about things we're not technically supposed to eat... ehh whenever I want. I was blessed with a good metabolism, I just take insulin to cover it. I figure things like icecream and cookies (from a package) are easier to bolus for than "real food" because the carb content is right there on the packet.
