Good things about diabetes:

In Europe you get free prescriptions even for non diabetic stuff
You can get better deals on a personal pension
You become motivated to live a healthier lifestyle:bike:
You become educated about your body:smartass:
You get to be part of the big D club:sheep:
Perhaps more than any other disease you can be pro-active in its management
There's a really great forum to talk to other diabetics:tee:

Most of these are not original... I kinda collect them.

*Your mental math skills are amazing (all that figuring out boluses)
*You can get your friends to eat at any restaurant you want... regardless of if it's a diabetes necessity or not!
* In a group hostage situation you can be sure you'll be among the first to be released, faster than you can jingle your MedicAlert bracelet and say "hey, does anyone have a drink? I'm feeling thirsty ..."
* You can speak with some authority on the subject of diabetes - unlike say, the subject of the current up-to-date situation in the Middle East - and wow friends and family with statistics and lots of complex, polysyllabic words like "hypoglycemia"
* Even though you may have no letters from that secret admirer, you'll always have diabetes-related junk mail so you can know at least that you'll have something to pull out of the mailbox in case neighbors are watching
* You get to finely hone your swearing abilities with all those times when your BSL isn't what you expected
* Enjoy the giddy feeling of living dangerously ALL THE TIME: "Bungy-jumping? A walking tour in Zaire? PAH! I have DIABETES!"
* Always good emotional blackmail in a family fight
* When annoying men ask you "why do you always drink Diet Coke? You’re so image- conscious. Girls are always worried about their weight.." you can reply with "I have diabetes" and watch in delight as they turn bright red and mumble an apology.

Welllll, don't anyone tell my secrets, they are hard earned!
1. I can take a nap in the middle of the day.
2. I can not eat something that is on the dinner menu, if I don't like it, just have to say, "I am not allowed to have that".
3. I have been able to meet people from all over the world on this forum, and don't always have to be talking about Diabetes, even if I tell other computer users in the family that I "really need to check something on the forum".
4. I can always get my husband to "stop" when I am tired of being in the car, after all we Diabetics need frequent "rest stops", don't we? Used to be he wouldn't stop on a driving trip unless he was "about to burst"!

That excuse will automatically get your license revoked in Virginia...

That excuse will automatically get your license revoked in Virginia...

A fellow in my town was drunk in a electric wheelchair. He had a habit of drinking and driving his wheel chair, running people off sidewalks and causing general havoc with his wheelchair. Finally one day he was cited for reckness driving. He claimed he was not drunk. He had a diabetic low and was out of control. The miracle of breath tests proved him wrong though. It made interesting news.

I want to state on the record I've never actually tried this.

I've used this excuse to get out of...mowing the lawn, doing the laundry, etc. So it is a GOOD excuse :T . I'm just saying it won't work if you try it on a cop (and if someone were driving while low, they should freakin' know better).

I second that. Here in Hawaii Diabetes is an epidemic. Our kids are 25% overweight and higher than the nation's average. If this high fat, high salt fast foods don't get cut back along with inactivity(computer games & TV) we will be seeing teens and pre-teens developing T2 diabetes.

Anything good about diabetes.....sheesh...about the only positive side I will say is that it has reinforced the diet I've been on for over a year.

I just got dx'd in January as tII - after spending the previous year losing 75lbs - going from 305 to about 230 now (I'm 6'4") - hoping to get healitheir.

So - now I know I'll have to be good, I've cut down my two fruit cups a day to half a cup, eating good food at the right times, and now my bs, after like 3 weeks, are between 3-7 after fasting and between 5-10 right after eating - exactly where my doc wants me to be. Just on the metformin.

I've switched to low carb beer - called Molson Sterling in Canada - actually it's a nice, dry, crisp ale and I'm getting 2.5 carbs as opposed to the 15 carbs in a normal bottle!

So - I guess one good thing would be that if you manage yourself effectively - you will be ery healthy.

Like my Dr. said - "the paradoxical thing about diabetes is that if you control it well, and are disciplined - you will be healthier and live longer than many other people, who take their health for granted."

Anyhow - it's also Friday.....

In our state I know of several times when people with diabetses were abused by cops who didn't know better. There was a vidoe of a woman getting beat up by the cops in Wichita. Now if they stop you and you say your diabetic they let you go. but then there was the guy in Liberal that they shot and killed when he was acting up.
The good thing is I'm getting healthier and losing some of this weight so maybe someday I won't be over weight.
My clothes fit better and I now shop in the misses section and not the fat ladies.
I eat to live and not live to eat.
I get to pick anything I want to eat and no one tells me what I should eat anymore.
I want to eat healthy now.

I forgot to add : free flu jabs (in the UK at least). In fact, I've not been ill at all since I was diagnosed.
