Hi :) I just got back from the Dr.'s. My bg's are still jumping around, and so he upped my metformin (I take metformin in addition to my humalog: Not just for the Type 2's anymore!) to 1000 mg in the morning, and 500 at dinner. He is still planning on doing the symlin this fall. He says I need to be on the full dose (2000 mg's) in order to get insurance approval for the symlin, and so we are gradually getting there.
Also, I found out what was up with my feet. Ok, so many women would be able to sympathize with this one. You know how you find that one pair of shoes that you wear all the time and that you have owned for years?? Well, I have this pair of black shoes that I just love and I have had them for like 3-4 years. My dr. told me that I am to throw them away when I get home this evening.....Apparently the red spots were broken capallaries in my skin....Not good stuffs....I'm really bumming about it though....:bawling:
But, I guess it is a small price to pay for good feet :)

Sounds like a good appointment for the most part :). It's funny, it sounds like you are trying to avoid having to take Symlin, and I am actually doing the opposite...I'm pushing for it. I'm having a lot of problems at the moment getting things under control. I feel like crying myself :bawling:.
I just changed my appointment...arranged to make it a little sooner (up from the 23 to the 15th). I'm going to definitely be expressing myself at this appointment and let them know that something needs to be changed. I'm going to really stress that.
I'm so frustrated at this point :argh: I can't even put it into words.
Sorry for hijacking this post, Laura, I hope that things continue to improve for you
Take care!

Yeah, it was a great appt. Which is nice because I like improvements :)
It is not that I am avoiding symlin, it is just that I am worried about the whole insurance approval. I went through almost 2 years without insurance and I am still paying for supplies that I got during that time. I guess that I am just worried that insurance won't cover it and that I'll be stuck with a huge bill. But, I really trust this doctor. He is the type of Dr. that would push for things for his patients. I look forward to the good that symlin will do for my life and for my diabetes :) I have had a lot of troubles with control for a few years now, and I am just now starting to see improvements, and it is nice :)
I hope that they can figure out things for you! I completely understand the stress that you are going through. Like you said, just go in there, and don't leave until you and them can come to a conclusion as to what is happening and what can be done about it. Feel free to vent about this stuff anytime. We all need it with this disease! :)

It is unusual for T1s to be taking metformin, and I have never been able to figure out why. What prompted your doctor to put you on it? And what has your experience with metformion been like. It is supposed to stop the liver from producing glucose. Has it it helped reduce those unpredictable spikes?
I see you are on quite a lot of it. Have you have had any gastric discomfort as a result of taking it? I started using metformin a few months ago. It is definitely making blood sugar control a lot easier. But I am struggling with the side-effects!
Cheers,
Mark

Well, I am not really completely sure as to why he had thought of it, but I'm glad that he did! I could have been having better control all these years if my other dr's had just told me about it. I know that I was having high bg's practically all the time. Especially the morning (the dawn effect). It has reduced the occurance of unexpected high's, but I still have a lot of work to do to get my bg's at a stable level throughout the day. But, I know when he told me he was putting me on it, the first thing out of my mouth was, "Isn't that a Type 2 medication?" I guess that it is getting more and more popular for Type 1's to be on oral meds along with their insulin.
As far as side effects go, I haven't really experienced anything wierd. I haven't had any gastric problems, thankfully. :) I find that my stomach gets queezy really easily, but that is about it. I hope that they can help you deal with the side effects so that they don't make you miserable! :ciao:

Wow, Metformin? and Symlin for Type 1? What a thought. That's very interesting. Good Luck with that. I hope that your bsl's stop bouncing
around soon. Keep us posted on that one, please. Thanks. :)
You poor Baby. I'm sorry that you have to get rid of your shoes. :( Were they
high heels? WELL, you didn't mention shoes. Of course. :)

Thank you! I took the new dose of metformin this morning, and my bg's have been normal all day! Hopefully, this pattern will keep up!
And, I know it is a little wierd and obcessive to love a pair of shoes that much, but I wore these shoes almost every day. I have no clue what black shoes I'm going to use now. The only other pair of black dress shoes I have are my dress boots. Not as comfortable as my black dress shoes....They were flats, no heels, and went with almost everything. But, my husband actually ripped them up last night so that I couldn't take them out of the garbage, so they are gone for good.....:bawling: I'm so lame, and really not that much of a girly girl, but there is something about shoes that just speaks to me.....lol
