Hi
I'm waiting for my hospital appt to come through - been waiting for nearly 5 weeks now :thumpdown so tomorrow I will ring them. Anyway, I have protein in my urine & am wondering what tests the hospital will do i.e. urine analysis / kidney scan? Also, could I be put on some form of medication for it? Am feeling a bit anxious.
Thanks

They will probably do a microalbumin test on your urine. More about it here: http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/microalbumin/glance.html. I haven't had any protein in my urine, so I'm not sure what/if they can give you something to help other than getting you bg's down. Good luck.

How has your bp been Georgia? High blood pressure can increase / cause protien (both protienurea and microalbumin) in the urine. The major tests you want to check are Creatnine, BUN, and potassium for the blood test and protien and microalbumin in the urine. Be thinking good thoughts for you!

hi Georgia. Dont worry too much just keep good controls. Kidney problems develop slowly over the years. They will probably put u on ace-inhibitors to protect ur kidneys, instead of methyldopa, after checking ur micro-albuminurea. they should also ask u to get ur eyes checked for retinopathy, if u hav'nt gotten them checked recently.
Best wishes

I've had protein in my urine lots and lots of times but a full kidney check up revealed they were fine. I quite often have cystitis, do you think this is what's causing it and not my kidneys starting to fail?

Hi guys
It's always good knowing what to expect. My appt came through this morning for 27 February so not long to wait now.
Thanks for the link mwalt2 :top:
Brion my bp is a lot better thank you. It's on average 130/80 at home but still tends to be higher at the doctors - I saw my gp this morning & I'm glad to say my bp was lower than usual there, think it was 170/90, so it seems the Methyldopa have started to work...he has doubled the dosage. He thinks that I may have white coat syndrome. Thanks for remembering about me :)
Cheers for the info mwd. Yes I am trying to keep good control of my sugars. I think I can remember my gp saying a while back that as I am hoping to start trying for a family, as soon as everything is in ship shape, they won't put me on the ace inhibitors :o( I'll have to see what the hospital say in a few weeks time.
Fiona that's great news that your kidneys are ok - it must have been a relief once you found out.
Thanks again everyone.

Hi! I know that having protein in your urine can be a very scary thing. I had that after I got out of the hospital the first time that I had ketoacidosis. Well, it wasn't a terribly large amount, as far as I know. What she did was she put me on Lycinopril (spelling?) which is a blood pressure med. It helped immensly. I am not sure why blood pressure meds helped it, but it was great :) Plus, those meds are really inexpensive. The Lycinopril was only like $15.00 for a 30 day supply (without insurance price).
Good luck! I hope they get it all figured out for you!
Hi Georgia! Even i was switched on to methyldopa during my pregnancy and b/feeding time. i was on ace-inhibitors for 2 years before and have started it again since last 1 year after a gap of abt 2 years. no problems. pregnancy was smooth and uneventful and i have a lovely 2 year old daughter.

That's encouraging news to hear mwd - congratulations on your lovely daughter. Someone else on here a while back recommended diabetic mommy & I agree that it is a great site :)
