Well, 24 hours ago I made the switch to Novolog from Humalog in my pump. So far I haven't had to change any basal settings in my pump. Therefore I take it the two are equal in terms of effect. For me I noticed that Novolog acts faster and doesn't cause me to run as high (the peak) two hours after a meal.

Again, this is only a 24 our observation, but to me the two are pretty identical. I think the truth will come in day 3 of using it (since for some reason I seem to run high at 2.5 days of infusion site change.) I am not sure if the high is from the Humalog starting to go bad in the pump from body heat, or from the infusion set needing to be changed.

I'll try to see what happens and give a full and detailed report in a week.

Actually.. umm.. Humalin is NPH, Novolog is Lispro (Rapid).. If you are having problems with Humalin, I suggest you switch to Lantus. ;)

You are on the dinosaurs of insulins. They're tried and true, but they have quickly been outdated by newer faster and better insulins.

Switch from R to humalog or novolog (R takes a LOT longer to work than the newer -log insulins)
from NPH to Lantus or what's the other one called Levimir?

If you are still on the old NPH, then that is something you might want to consider changing. By changing that to something like Lantus, you will have much more flexibility and better control. It is up to you though, if you are happy with what you have now (which you have said you aren't), then that is perfectly fine.

I still look back and can't believe it's only been 3 years ago that I went on Humalog. Before that I was on NPH and R and dropping like a rock at least once every three months. No dangerous lows that I haven't been able to take care of since December 2002.

My main reason for switching to Novolog was it's 50% cheaper than Humalog through my insurance. Humalog is a tier 3 drug (highest copay) and Novolog is a tier 2 drug. So I made the switch mainly for that reason, but also because I've heard it's more recommended for pump users.

Until this summer (I think) only Novolog was approved for pumping, though no one cared if Humalog was prescribed or used. Novolog used to brag about that in big bold letters on their website, but they stopped that recently. There's a thread here somewhere about that...

I have been on Novolog for about 6 months. I am definetely much more sensitive to it and it is in my opinion faster acting than Humalog. It is a more precise Insulin and I think you will love it. Good luck :)

I have only been on Novolog, so I can't offer much of a comparison.

However, I did get a momentary shock today. I did my normal mail order pharmacy re-order of novolog, it showed up today. I opened the box, and there were 12 vials/boxes and for a split second I freaked out.

Apparently Novolog changed their packaging from blue to orange on their boxes. So I was expecting to see a styrofoam container filled with 12 blue boxes, but instead, I see 12 orange boxes.

So after a few minutes of carefully comparing old and new boxes, I was satisfied. Same stuff... new packaging.

But you know that feeling you get for a split second, when you are like Oh #$%@!

Ok, so it wasn't just me. I picked up my first prescription of it about 3 weeks ago, but didn't switch till recently since I had 2 vials of Humalog left (I still have one for backup incase I get a bad reaction to Humalog.) When I picked up the box I thought something looked different on it and then I compared it to a box I had at home. Yup, same stuff, same box, just a different color stripe on it.

I have used Humalog from day one with my pump and have asked about changing with my DR but of course he views them as the same. I was on Novolog in the beginning with that awful 70/30 ****. It wasn't until I came to Indiana I was started on Lantus, go figure? A small town hillbilly DR prescribes Lantus while a well known Endo puts me on 70/30. Now I look back and wonder how I ever kept in control with that mix.

Novolog and Humalog really aren't that different. Novolog works a little faster, but it is also a bit cheaper than humalog. So, it could save you some money to switch to Novolog. Which, I think that $$ savings is something that we are interested in with this disease too....it is an expensive one....

Keep us posted on your findings! I would love to know. I'm using Humalog right now, but it was some that I had gotten for free, but once that it gone, I'm planning on using Novolog if my dr. says that it is all good :top:

I have been using Novolog w/ my pump since day one.
I used to use Hulmin R and NPH prior to my pump and had no problems and I only took 2 shots a day.

Jedi,

I switched to Lantus and Novalog approx. a month ago (from Humilin N and R,) -- and that is what I have noticed also.

Novalog acts faster, but is WAY more steady (for me.) It doesn't give me swings high OR low that sneak up on me.

Lantus and Novalog have been things of beauty for me.

Well, so far I have noticed 0 differences. My levels seem to run about the same, I have made 0 changes to my basal rate, and I don't think I've had any unexplained highs or lows. To me, they are 100% identical, Novolog is just 50% cheaper for me.

Glad the Novolog is working. I'm wondering if I should discuss it with my CDE over the Humalog I'm currently on. I've been on the Humalog for several years now.

I just made the switch to Novolog. It seems great so far. I could swear the stuff does not sting nearly as much as Humalog. I never noticed this when I was on shots, but with the pump, it really does not sting at all. With the Humalog, when I had a large dose, like 20 units, I would find myself rubbing my set.

Maybe it's just in my head.. but I doubt it. Regardless, I am very satisfied with it. :)

Good luck with Novalog. It will make an interesting science experiment and I hope a positive one. Looking forward to hearing how your week goes.

What are you going to do with all that extra cash??

When I switched from Humalog to Novalog, I noticed the duration go up from about 2 1/2 hours to about 3 hours for me.
