Just wondering what kind of leeway there is for taking lantus? If I usually take me shot about 10:15pm, but the next night I don't take it until midnight - what are the implications and impact on blood sugars?
What do all of you guys do when you are going out for the evening? Or if you are out for the evening and plan on getting home on time to take the lantus and then end up staying out later, but you don't have the lantus with you.
I am still trying to figure out the best way to do this. Any ideas?

I've heard that it has a 1 hour window. That being if you take it at 10:15 then you must take it by 11:15 the next night. Otherwise you will have overlaps or gaps without insulin that can cause you to drop low or go high.

I don't think you would need to worry about it too much if you can't or don't take your Lantus "on time" once in a while. If you do your best to be consistent for the most part, I think that's what's important.

When I was on Lantus, I could go No longer than 1 hour. After 1 hour 15mins, I started getting Sick. I also had to split my doses due to Lantus not working the full 24hrs for me.

I don't worry about the timing too much, sometimes I'll go 2-3 hours beyond my usual time, either accidentally or purposefully, and I don't see a difference in my bg. But, I do split my dose so I feel justified in stretching it out a bit because I know I'm not running out. But that's just me. If you're not seeing a rise in your bg, I wouldn't worry about it. :top:

When I was on Lantus and due to my work schedule I split my dose. It worked great for me.

I set an alarm that reminds me to take it at 9 pm and have only missed it once (I remembered when I got home from work). The delay didn't seem to have an impact on my numbers that night or the following day, that I recall; however, the reason I had missed it was I had been in a meeting and I think I had fewer carbs in the evening that I usually would have, so maybe that affected the results.

I never took Lantus...but when I was on NPH or the 70/30 split I tried to take my insulin about the same time everyday (did I always succeed...NO but I tried). I even got up on the weekends to take the shot and eat....yuck....As for what to do when your out......take it with you. Find a way that you can take it with you. Here are several ideas..

Does it come in a pen?

carry just the syringe and the vial

prefill a syringe and put it somewhere that the plunger won't get pushed..I use to put mine in the fold of my checkbook.

good luck

I notice a bit of a rise in my bg if I'm more than an hour or so late... but really it's not too big of a deal, as MOST nights I take it at 11pm. The only times I got into *real* trouble with it was if I forgot to take it until the morning. That said I usually bring my lantus with me so I have it when I'm out. (whether I remember to take it is quite another story, but at least I have it)

My doctor always told me to do it every night at the same time. But I think you should just watch your sugars the next day. My sugars are up and down all the time so I cant ever tell if its from not doing it at the same time every night or not. But I do have my cell phone alarm clock set for 10:00 pm and I do my shot then take my other pills and stuff all at the same time. But actually now I carry my test machine and insulins and needles, the whole package with me where I go!!!
