Does anyone bolus for protein and fat?
Does anyone know if the Animas pump takes protein and fat into consideration when it boluses? If I tell it I'm going to eat a 32 oz. steak will it give me a bolus?
Do you have to perform manual tricks to bolus for protein and fat?

I've never eaten a 32oz steak...
For steak and chicken, I play it by ear since I know both of those will make my sugars go up about two to three hours after eating LARGE portions. Pork does not have the same effect, and I don't think fish does either.
So basically, oop, I test at the traditional two hour post-meal point and three hours and four. It's a small price to pay when eating steak that looks like the one Cipher was eating in the Matrix...

I usually in the evening have protein alone and I do have to count for it. I count it to avoid that spike that Duck talks about 3 hrs later.
Thats a lot of protein there, that would be in my system for a loooooong time.
Chicken and pork do not affect me as much as red meat and fish.
I have found that a little salad helps out a lot.

I just started using a dual wave bolus for protein, especially at night- where my blood sugar levels seem to get problematic . I usually have egg whites for a snack in the evening (I know it's weird  ) and for some reason my blood sugar would always spike before bed. Now that I am using this dual wave bolus, it seems to be helping :).

While I don't bolus for fat I may change my bolus because of fat. For instance, if I'm eating pizza (a classic example) from a particular parlor, I'll run a combo wave bolus for the carbs, 80% now, 20% over the next 2 hrs because of the fat in the pizza. Pizza from a different parlor may give different results if I used the same type of bolus.
Pumps don't take fat or protein into consideration, only carbs. I can't tell it that I'm eating a 32 oz steak, but I can trick it into bolusing for a large amount of protein. For instance, if I were to eat a 32 oz steak :eating: , I'd count each oz as 3g of carbs. That would equal 14g, which I'd then square wave bolus over 6 hours because protein affects my BGLs much slower that straight carbs do. I only bolus for protein if it's over 4 oz. Whether it's beef or pork seems to make little difference to me.
As always in these situations, YMMV

Thanks for your input. I greatly appreciate it.
BTW, The Matrix was the best movie ever made. And I've never eaten a 32 oz. steak.

I went to that movie reluctantly...My "date" wanted to see Keanu Reeves (he's kinda cute), I thought it would be a mood killer...A couple hours later, I knew my life had changed and she thought the movie sucked.

David, I'm confused about your calculations. First, do you really eat a 32 oz steak? That's about 2 lbs. Also, the carb calc of 3g x 32 oz would be 96 grams. I have a feeling your steak was a bit smaller. That said, I like the idea of the conversion of protein to carbs. I may try the 3g carb per oz of protein myself. I've been doing something similar with out the analytical approach.
