View Full Version : Still Increasing Insulin
Burmese

Hello
The doctor now has me on 70 units Levemir morning and 70 units at night.
Also taking 30 units Nova Rapid with meals. There still is no change in the sugar levels. They are still running in the 20's.
Something I find strange is my when I take my NovaRapid before each meal my sugars go higher after the meal. I am watching what I eat to a T.
A specialist came in over the weekend and suggested that I be put on a pump ASAP and even as far as to say I should be in the hospital till they sort this out.
I thought it was bad when I was scratching my head, but now they are scratching there head. The only course of action till they decide on the pump is to increase the insulin by a few units after 3 days of no change. They are looking at other specialist as well to get there input on this.
Fun! Fun! Fun!

It sounds to me like you have extreme insulin resistance. I personally don't see a pump as helping at all in this case. I would maybe try to get a second opinion from another doctor on what could be causing it. I do think you should be admitted to the hospital though so you can be put on an IV drip of insulin.

I have had my Family Doctor, Internal Medicine, Diabetic Specialist, Diabetic Educator all scratch there head over this, I should also mention that I am on Avantia and Baby Asprin.
I am not sure what other people thought when they where first told they where a Diabetic, but for me I kinda of thought it was joke and would be taking care of right away. Now three years later it is worse than ever and no sign of control yet. Now since finding out I was Diabetic I have done alot of reading and seen first hand the effects this has on your body, mind, and your family. I have seen close friends die, lose legs, and go blind.
After three years the joke part has worn off and the fear of what this can do to you has set in. Everytime I try something new I have hopes of better control only to find no better sucess and most times worse control.
I still keep a chin up and know that there is something that will work, what I hope for is that it is sooner than later and not to late that it causes serious damage.
Thanks
Chris

Chris,
I am with JediSkipdogg on this. You are obviously very insulin resistant. Simply giving you more of the stuff isn't going to solve the problem. And administering it more cleverly (with a pump) probably won't help much either. The challenge is to become more sensitive to all this insulin. It will make your blood sugar come down and give you some control.
I see you are taking Avandia and that it isn't making much difference. Sounds like you need a combination of tactics that include medicine, food and lifestyle. The easiest thing you can do is to cut the carbs right back. How is your weight? And are you getting lots of exercise?
Cheers,
Mark

I agree that it looks as if Burmese is grossly insensitve to insulin and I also can't see the logic of pumping something that already is not working.
I am on a sensitising combination of pioglitazone (an Avandia related drug) in combination with gliclazide (which I take at the maximum recommended dose) along with Metformin and when I moved onto this powerful combination, things started working for me.
The combination of pioglitazone and gliclazide was not recommended, but in the UK this restriction was lifted in 2004/2005.

Are you taking steriods for some reason? I had to take them and they made my bg go through the roof overnight!

Are you talking to me?
If so, which of my medicines do you think are steroids - as far as I know (!) I am not taking steroids. :flute: :questionm :questionm
