View Full Version : Animas 1250 - Auto Off Alarm Option?

I had my first pump alarm this morning - an Auto Off alarm because I hadn't pressed a button in 18 hours. Unfortunately, it woke me up when there was nothing wrong - so much for sleeping in. Then it started giving me No Prime No Delivery alarms, so I quit looking for a "Turn Back On" option, disconnected, reprimed and that seemed to work. Because I'm still pumping saline until Wednesday, this was no emergency, but I was a little annoyed at trying to figure out how to make my pump happy again so I could go back to sleep.

I had originally turned this off, but my CDE/Pump Trainer insisted it should be on when we went through the pump settings during pump training. We compromised on 18 hours as a setting that would let me sleep in, but I skipped dinner last night and my lunch humalog shot (and pretend saline bolus) was at 11:15 AM yesterday, so my pump alarmed at 5:15 this morning - precisely 18 hours later.

I called Animas Support this afternoon to ask for clarification on the best way to get the pump back "on" after an Auto Off, and also asked her why this feature was there. She laughed when I said I didn't think the alarm would do any good if I was already passed out from DKA (never happened to me yet anyways), and was very pleasant to talk to, but I don't feel I got a clear answer about why I should leave the Auto Off feature enabled. (Or if I did, I sure didn't understand it.)

Now my question is, what the heck is this feature good for anyways? :stupido2: Is there a real solid reason for leaving the Auto Off feature enabled?

cheers,
j

It's not suppose to alert you but maybe alert others something is wrong. I'm not sure how loud that alarm is but they claim it should be so others can here it walking by or ones that live with you so they can check up on you. That's pretty much it.

PERSONALLY, I don't believe in using the auto off feature, because I'm more concerned about a lack of insulin delivery than I am catering to that feature. I know what the mfgr's rationale is, but I just don't agree with it! :)

I have that feature turned off. It is in case you black out, for 18 hours. Put it this way, if you are out for 18 hours, no alarm will revive you. My trainer suggested leaving it off to me. At least it happened on saline, probably woulda really freaked you out on insulin. I know I woulda been...

It's not made to alert you. It's made to alert others. If you are home alone and having an insulin reaction and somebody comes home and hears that going off they can find you faster and assist you.
