If you are not insulin dependent diabetic, what effect would it be if you inject insulin? (Type 2 diabetic) would it help your pancreas work much more efficiently?:hmmmm:

I imagine that it would just give you a standard low, but then, it does depend on the person and their circumstances.

one recommended therapy is for someone to be on both pills and insulin (basal)--if you're T2, the thinking is that by giving your pancreas a "Rest" and not demanding so much of it that it MIGHT regain some function or last longer.

How much that works?--- I haven't read definite studies Yea or Nay

dacruzer,

The effect injecting insulin will have depends on how insulin resistant, as a T2, you are. Insulin injected in conjunction with whatever it takes to minimise insulin resistance can be very effective. But as Burmese discovered and relates in http://www.diabetesforums.com/type-two-diabetes/8156-still-increasing-insulin.html, this is not aways the case. If insulin resistance is severe, injecting insulin won't make much of a difference.

Cheers,

Mark

Its me again, i guess i should have elaborated my position more. I am participating in a research study. I was invited a year ago to join this research about Lantus insulin which is just being introduced to Canada. My condition (control baseline test) at that time was that I was a borderline diabetic. I take a pill in the morning, (I do not know whether this is fish oil or a placebo) and at night i inject myself insulin, I take my b/s reading in the morning everyday as part of the study. At the onset, they told me that I am not insulin dependent. I was 195 #'s at that time. They do not tell me anything about diabetes (except the sympthoms, like dry feet, blurred vision teeth etc) they were testing me every month for 6 mos, then once after six mos, and now going in March for my 1st year. They will do an echo gram on my neck, legs and heart arteries. I used to smoke but after my "event" i quit. I'm clean now for 1and half yrs. I ask them a lot of questions but I do not get a clear answer. I found this site just recently and thanks God, I know more about diabetes than before. They probably just give me enough info to satisfy my curiosity and not compromise the study. They did not forbid me 'tho when I informed them that I have joined this Forum. I asked about this non insulin dependency and then injecting myself with insulin. They told me that it will do no harm and to the contrary, it will help my pancreas. Asked them about weight gain, (I am now at 205) and they seem to not address my concern. (watch what I eat, its not the insulin, its the fat that's changing into muscle, it will stabilize, etc) I just completed my daily food intake and exercise activities. Now, probably you will understand my questions in this forum. Thanks to you all who has responded

Hi Dacruzer, I take lantus and as a type 2 it affords me really good control. I imagine that if your body is able to use your own insulin then taking extra would just bring you low, the same as if I took too much. I'm surprised that they won't give you info seeing as your in a study. I would press them for more info especially what the outcomes that they are looking for so you know what they're using you for. I was also told that if you're able to become part of a study, you'll get the best care available: maybe that's not so? Anyways, I hope this study helps you in some way. Let us know how it goes.

Hi Liz,
The research is called "Origin Trials". It is being held worldwide, so i am told. :dontknow: I take a pill/placebo in the morning, inject insulin at night and take fasting glucose reading daily in the morning. My target is to maintain it at 5.4. My average for a month is 5.4, 14 days is 5.5. Yes they look after me ( check ups and stuff). I will know better after March 7 for it is my 1st year complete checkup. I have a question for you 'tho, you said that youre using Lantus insulin right now? how long have you been using it? i was told that it just became available in Canada .
