Saturday night, I forgot my Lantus. I was just so exhausted I went to bed without it. This is a first for me, I am generally well organized. Sunday I was a little high all day, with a fasting of 184. I took a little extra Novolog, and thought I would be OK. Sunday night, I woke several times feeling sick to my stomach, when I finally got up Monday morning, my fasting level was 234. I stayed high all day (was at 295 at supper time) , despite being very careful about what I ate. So, I just woke at 3:30 am, feeling queasy again, but like I need to eat. I am at 265. Would missing one dose of Lantus cause all this?
I don't feel like I am sick, or coming down with anything. Just have the queasy stomach thing during the night, but am staying high most of the time.

I believe that Lantus though in theory lasts for 24 hours actually has a lesser effect for up to 3 days so missing a dose can take 3 days to recover from. If I miss a dose I take a lesser dose in the morning to carry over 'till that evening then take another lesser dose then go back to normal.

Penny, it could very well be the missed lantus dose. I have unfortunatly missid my dose once or twice, and it's not great. I in the past was scared of taking the dose late but now that I take it twice a day (12 hours apart) I would in the future, just take at least a partial dose. I hope this helps and that you are able to get your sugars down quickly.

Since Lantus covers you throughout a 24 hour period it is possible for you to go that high. And even higher if you don't check throughout the day. Like for me, I require roughly 1.5 units of insulin per hour in my pump. 1 unit of insulin controls my BG 35 points. So in an afternoon (4 hours) with no basal going into me, I can go from 120 to 260 with no problem. At least for me I can adjust that. For someone on Lantus, the problem is you can't really take a delayed Lantus shot if it's too late (say more than 5 hours late.) You can but when you get back on schedule you have to test often to watch your levels with overlapping doses.

I do think that the fact that you missed your Lantus did impact your blood sugars. From what I have read before about Lantus, you cannot make adjustments to Lantus and expect it to take effect the next day. I think there's something of a "lag" period. So if your levels were off even a day or so after that missed dose, it's possible that that's the reason.
Hope things have improved ;)

Here it is 9 in the morning, and I am still high, 245! We are going away for the night, and will be eating out at least 3 meals. I am still hungry and am not sure how to adjust things for the day. We will be traveling for about 2 hours, which will put us there a bit past lunch time. Then we usually eat at a buffet around 6. I still have a little queasy feeling, so wonder if maybe I am coming down with something. :dontknow: I feel good otherwise. I sure hate to be sick for this much needed break! I ate a piece of toast with peanut butter, and 1/2 a banana, as it needs to last me until at least 1:00. I am guzzling water, Duck!
