View Full Version : 2 Minutes, 5 seconds set change

If someone had asked me how long I take to change a set, I'd have said at least 4 minutes. I just timed the whole thing from start to finish: 2 minutes, 5 seconds. I started with removal of the old set and stopped when the cannula prime was started (set attached and introducer needle out). That's a lot better than the 15 minutes it used to take.
If I had used the Quickserter, I would have needed another 20-30 seconds to fool around with it...
Bwuuuhaaaahaaaaa! You're nuts, Spike. But that has to be a record!

oh, it wasn't a brag, it was me realizing things that HAVE to be done, don't always take as long as one might guess. I'd always thought it took twice that time. I'd not want to start a competition and have someone mess up their set change trying for a "better" time. The right time is the safe one!

Amen, brother.
Though, I do have to do a change tonight...Hmmmmmm...125 seconds, eh?

oh boy, I can just see the lawsuits piling up! :) "Your honor, I was on this pumper's forum and one of the members said he could change his set in 2 minutes, so I tried to beat him. It is my contention it is HIS fault that I kinked my cannula and ended up with DKA. I never would have rushed the set change if he hadn't posted his time. Now I have all these hospital bills..."

For me the quickserter would be of big help. I sit there for at least 2 minutes trying to get the needle and cannula in. One of these days I will break down and buy one from MM again. I have been looking on Ebay for one but people bid on those like they are buying a winning lottery ticket. :hmmmm2:

lol...
Tomorrow will be my 3rd change. I'd be happy to make 10 minutes. The first change, I failed to remove the safety cover from the insertion needle. The second change I failed to remove the adhesive covering so I just made a big hole in myself (which wasn't pleasant).
They say the 3rd time is a charm. Let's hope so...

When I was using the MM Sofsets, I once forgot to remove the needle from the cannula when I was inserted...Let me tell you how bad that hurt when I pulled my pants back up.

How about forgeting to remove the flaps on the back of the adhesive? I inserted and then realized I didn't remove the flaps and was wondering why it wasn't sticking. I tried so hard to get them off without having to remove the set but it just didn't work.

Mine came the other day for the "price" of a phone call to MM.

I started pumping back in mid-December. The first insertion with the pump trainer took me FOREVER! The next few site changes took me a good 10-15 minutes. I can now change my site in less than 5 minutes, unless the darn adhesive gets stuck inside the inserter as it did the other night.......OUCH!

After using the inserter 2 or 3 times, I'm back to doing it manually. It's a lot faster and fiddle-free. I only tried it because MM suggested it because of 2 bent cannulas. (keep in mind I've pumped 10 years with NO bent cannulas, except for the couple I had within the last 2 weeks).

When I put my first set with the instructor in I did it fairly fast. I wasn't to keen on showing my belly so I held my shirt up just a little and it as quick as I could w/o showing my belly.
Now usually when I change it, it takes 5mins or less. Get the iv prep and new set. Go sit down and open both packages. Take the tubing off the pump and put the new one on it. Take off the safetly thing on the cannula/needle. Wipe the IV prep where its going. Take of half of the sticky part. Pinch a inch and get ready to push the needle in. Sometimes its harder going thru the skin the others havent figured that out.
BTW, my wife thinks it takes about half an hour to do these things. PLEASE do not tell her it can be done in 125 seconds...

Trust me, the peace and quiet the requisite 30 minutes of changing an insertion set cannot be priced around this house with a 2-year old!

Take a long cruise and come back when he/she is 3. :)
I was lucky; my kid never went through the "terrible twos" phase.
